40L is under nearly every rectangular volume allowed on NA and EU carriers. I've had one for about a year and a half now, and I *can* pack it so full it won't fit in the overhead, but unless I decide to overstuff it and add my shoes in the outside pockets, it is a perfect fit for nearly every jet built in the past 30 years and turboprops like the ATR72. In the latter is where I encountered the "too full" pack option, though I was packed for a 4+ week Christmas trip. In an Embraer 145 it fits perfectly in an overhead, if admittedly taking up an entire overhead. In a Airbus 32x Neo it fits like a glove with the long dimension = the depth of the overhead bin and the width = height of the bin, so multiple Farpoint/Fairviews can stack like sideways pancakes.

If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.

NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

35-40lbs is heavy! That's more than I pack for 4 nighters in the mountains 😂

If you're packing that much, this should be a good travel pack. Just looking to keep the weight off the shoulders.
yeah it's a lot. When I travel for fun I bring a lot of tech which creates most of the weight. Surface, tablet, kindle, tech sack with chargers, power bank, DSLR and lens, Switch. Obviously I end up using almost none of that stuff, but it's nice to have during 24hrs of flights and 5 layovers!

thats not how warranties work. it's not a buy 1 get 1 free
No lifetime warranty is a 'bogo'. Warranties all have terms and almost ALL state that repair is an option under the warranty. If a product is made well, I could see a repair being done instead of replacement, and many products to designed to last a lifetime are designed for repairs vs replacement.

The definition of lifetime differs too. It is usually lifetime warranty to the first purchaser or lifetime for a certain amount of time or until the item is no longer sold. No one does the craftsman 'just bring it in and swap no questions asked' lifetime warranty anymore--I don't even think craftsman does.

The other thing is that warranty statements (like other legal documents today) have become 'fluid' and are constantly changing (kinda goes against the point of having a written agreement in the first place, but that's a different topic), so today's 'lifetime' warranty could be superseded by a 'new' warranty statement that limits the time or changes the term or both.

So while a lifetime warranty is a statement by a manufacturer that they stand behind the product, it should not be confused with a bogo, and can be changed at any time after a product is purchased.

I do the same in my Ozark Trail. Big Grin Turtle shell mode helps a lot to distribute the load, but my feet feel it. EEK!

Hey guys I just got this but it aint good. It's too small. That airscape pocket to hide the straps and hip strap is actually inverted in the body of the backpack it's not as deep. There are zero compartments within the backpack. The laptop sleeve is very stupid - it takes up a huge chunk of space to take away from what's already a not-so-deep body. I have no clue how people are one bagging with this on weeklong trips.
No wonder this item is "frequently returned" on amazon and they are selling it almost 50% off/

I haven't received mine yet. Are you saying this in regards to other packs or generally speaking?

My family and I packed 40L each for our 13 days in Greece. If you haven't packed before you don't literally bring everything and multiple clothing options with you. This doesn't replace a luggage set. You're carrying as you traverse a foreign city, so you pack light, and use laundry service or sink wash.

Consider this guide from Pack Hacker on how to pack a bag like this. Plus, the GoRuck GR2 they use has a similar internal layout to the Osprey Farpoint 40L, just a different interior zip compartment. https://packhacker.com/blog/gener...-carry-on/

yea, its a 26L so not sure if it can accommodate camera insert
It should fit. I use 26L for my 14" laptop,15.6" portable monitor,12" tablet and Canon 80D with 2 lens (in the sling bag for extra protection) when traveling.

Have one of the older models of this and its a solid bag.

I did change over to the REI Ruckpack 30 and 40 bags because they're lighter and I didn't need as many straps that the Osprey had, but these have been reliable.

Can 40L work with 5 day 4 night Patagonia trekking, without food/tent/bedding but with cameras? Or it needs 55L?
I did the W Trek with this bag and stayed in Refugios so no sleeping supplies and this was perfect (I am guessing you are doing something similar). It's a travel bag which means it opens up like a suitcase which makes it bad for packing heavy gear but good for getting things out. It has hip straps which makes it good for walking with. I don't think you want a true backpacking bag if you aren't carrying gear

one of the best backpacks money can buy. The Osprey lifetime warranty makes this a worthy investment if you need a high quality backpack to last a decade or more. I've also had great experience w this brand Kelty, which has a 50L on sale for $135 in olive green. I bought their 44 liter backpack about 8 years ago and it has been around the world with me and is still going strong after heavy use transporting stones (I collect stones - bringing them home on your carry on is most cost effective vs shipping or checked luggage.) https://a.co/d/88iCGMj
I took an old Kelty Redwing all over the world. It was a beast, and I loved that it was basically a school backpack made rugged for hiking. I really liked the extensive admin pocket for organization. Eventually it started disintegrating and it was time for a new bag.

I was between this one and the Nebula. Decided to go for the Nebula as it was a bit cheaper and I didn't need the waste support as I don't do day long hikes any longer. Admin pockets aren't much of a thing any longer, but Osprey at least gives it a functional try. It's such a well made backpack. I'd buy Osprey again in a heartbeat.

Love this bag! Highly recommend stopping by REI or another similar shop in person to learn how to adjust the straps and make sure it sits on your waist right so the weight is distributed properly. The little straps on the top part of the shoulder were a game-changer when I figured out how to use them.

*To be clear, I'm suggesting you go "shop for a new bag" at REI, not bring your Amazon purchase in for a fitting.

It's not really the straps that's causing that but rather the one size adjustable suspension. The old farpoints didn't push into the main comparment nearly as much.

Wow, just used the new Amex discount for using 1 MR to get $40 off the $120 price, so $80 plus tax. H/T Frequentmiler: https://frequentmiler.com/amazon-...Instant%29
