Keep in mind that the M2 series chips are the ones where 512GB storage runs faster than 256GB storage. They fixed this for M3 and M4.

Scenario 1- you'd rather not spend an extra $150
Scenario 2- you want something brand new.

Pretty good list so far huh

New M4 is $850 for the past week everywhere.
Literally in the last 30 minutes (see immediately above) I've supplied 2 links (Amazon, Microcenter) for $899(ish) for the M4 MBA 13". Where are you seeing it for $850 "everywhere" ?
Here's one more, BB, at $999: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/appl...Id=6565862
Apple Edu is $899 too.
  • Nevermind - it's clear you just mean 'in the past', and yes, tend to agree.

16GB RAM isn't enough, in spite of all the macOS fanboy bravo, macOS still needs RAM, and it's why Apple keeps increasing the minimum amount.

16GB Is *ok* for most things but 32GB is something you'll never have to think about closing browser tabs and apps on.

They only increased the minimum RAM because of Apple Intelligence. We'd still be at 8GB base if that wasn't a thing. Thankfully we can turn off Apple Intelligence (for now) and take advantage of that extra RAM.

Hard to think of a scenario in which it wouldn't be worth the extra $150 to buy a refurbished M4 from Apple.

Refurb? You can get a new m4 with these specs for $850 on sale.

That's just not true, people have been writing about the 8GB being insufficient for years now: https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/1...low-device
It doesn't matter what Apple marketing tells you, 8GB was no longer sufficient long before Apple Intelligence was a thing. At our org, who buys thousands of the things, we standardized on 16GB minimum years ago because 8GB is just not enough. There is nothing special about macOS that defies physics- apps still run in RAM. In fact, the storage debacle on the M2 proved this out, too, they had to swap to disk so much, their 256GB storage problem caused even worse performance than would've otherwise been necessary.

16GB is, of course, perfectly fine for a basic amount of things. It's an appropriate base level today (8GB is not), my suggestion is 32GB means you won't have to think about it for the vast majority of use cases. I've seen how *actual* people stack browser tabs.

Caution: this model also suffers from the 'crash on wake' issue. Google it. That made me decide to stay away from this model and go for M3 or M4.

Yes, a used one most likely, but a new one from Walmart on sale is $599 right now. In that respect I feel this is a better deal for just $100 more.
People who respond and don't actually know the value of Apple products, amirite?
Hell you can get a M4 equipped model for $150 more refurbished from Apple online store.

The 16GB M4 MacBook Air 13" corresponding model is $899, so in exchange for perhaps 20% less speed, but otherwise pretty similar characteristics, you save $200, or a bit more than 20% of the purchase price. Only you can determine if that's worthwhile. Yes, perhaps 2 years fewer MacOS support lifetime too. I don't see the disk speeds difference as terribly significant, but ymmv on that too.
I do see the M2 - M4 MBAs as 'better than' the M1 MBA, as the M1 has a slightly older form factor. Aside from that, it's tough to differentiate them except for the 10% or so per iteration standard generational updates one gets per year.
For those who want to spend the lowest amount of money, I can fully see the logic and can fully understand and agree.

It's got some bigger differences.
