I've waited this long and it won't hurt to wait a bit longer to save $10-$20 more.

You will recruit literally dozens of characters over the course of the game, manage their equipment, active and passive skills, and behavior (using something like FF12's gambit system) individually, and then you mix and match to build formations with up to 6 units, trying to synergize their skills.
If that doesn't sound fun to you all by itself, you're probably less likely to have a good time. I literally spent hours just tinkering with equipment, formations, and tactics to squeeze out every bit of potential from my characters and take on higher level enemies. That's really the primary draw IMO. The story is fine, the interactions between the characters are often enjoyable, graphically it looks great if you don't mind anime styling, and the sweeping orchestral soundtrack (5 hours long!) is quite good in many places. You can probably get by and enjoy these aspects without engaging too much with the complexity of the systems, especially on Story or even Normal mode difficulty, but I wouldn't expect you to love the game like people who enjoy the micromanagement do.
