I had one of these in the garage for a year and never got any hits. I have 3-4 other plastic snap types and those things are undefeated. Many, many catches and not many false hits.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't clean out old bait, Bad Design!

The problem with this unit is you can't clean it. You have to stick some peanut butter in through a few small holes on the end of the device. You can't get into it to clean it out and put fresh bait in. The directions in the box say to reach in with A-Tips to clean it out. Well its a vertical surface and you would have to have a Qtip that has a 90 degree bend in it and fiddle with it to even get to it much less clean it good. Seriously, whoever designed this never had to use it! You can't take it apart as when you fight to take the top and bottom apart, the wired connections are soldered and you risk breaking something trying to disassemble it. worst design ever so you peanut butter, as recommended as bait, just spoils in there and you fight with putting a cloth on a foot long stick to try and clean it out. This model is a M421B. Apparently the model M241 has a removable bait door to access the bait and clean out, much better design. DO NOT but this model. It really sucks trying to clean it. It kills the mice, just can't clean out the bait, dumbest design ever.

Tried multiple e-traps. Waste of $$$, every single one. Went back to the old Victor wooden trap (in this case the 4" wide heavy rat traps with the heavy duty yellow paddles) and they work like a charm in the barn (sometimes rats hitch a ride on pallets containing 40 bags of animal feed, necessitating the traps).
Biggest thing for snap traps? >>>> Set it so that it will be inaccessible to cats and other animals like poultry / birds, etc. <<<<
The biggest thing about rats is to find the right bait. Most of the time, PB doesn't seem to work well. Experiment with the type of bait and the old snap traps will be highly effective.

Oh yea, keep fingers away from the snap bar on the 4" traps LOL

Funny I used one of those snap trap. Set a trap and came back a couple hours later the trap is gone. Fox took the trap with a dead mouse on it. Guess it's better than poison

I agree that cleaning them out is a PITA. However, they work well and it's easy to dump out the rodent du jour. I use a long plastic knife to rebait the trap.

We tie ours down with baling twine (as the old saying goes, baling twine and duct tape holds the universe together... at least on a farm).

The one-star rating is for model M421B, unless that was just a typo? Model in this deal is M241
