I think the argument would be that Socket AM5 CPU/Mobo/RAM have gotten cheap enough that it is hard to recommend a new AM4 build unless you are on a really, really strict budget. A Ryzen 7600x + basic mobo + 16 GB RAM would be like $300 right now; this combo + basic AM4 mobo would be like $230; that extra $70 gets quite a bit more performance + a better upgrade path.

Do you mean for a main rig? Because this is great even for a budget gaming rig, or a cheap intro to a server build.

Weird deal. For somebody on 8gb with a low-end AM4? Other than that can't see who buys this

This is awful advice for anyone with a smaller budget. AM4 setups are still plenty fast and a big savings compared to newer AM5 setups. Even with the huge sale on the 7600x for $150 (normally $180) you're still way over the price for an AM4 system. For the $167 savings you could buy a used GPU or if not gaming save even more.

AM5
$150 - 7600x
$140 - MSI B650m motherboard
$120 - 32gb DDR5
=$410 on sale

AM4 $167 less
$153 - 5800XT + 16GB DDR4
$90 - MSI B550m motherboard
=$243

You can use lower spec motherboards or less RAM to save even more. PCs don't have to cost a lot, though everything has been going up in the past few weeks.
Got an am4 MB from AliExpress for $38 a couple months back and it works great. Still some great value in the platform, for people who don't require the latest and greatest

The only problem there is the AM5 still has a lot of leg room left 2+ years of upgrades where the AM4 is dead in the water . 3 years from now you can still slot in a new cpu in the AM5
I agree. Applause In many peoples mind support lifespan often takes a backseat to the buy in cost of a system. Generally speaking, I would not recommend building a new AM4 system here in October, 2025.

With that said I just purchased a AMD Ryzen 5 5500 for $55. On Facebook marketplace I purchased a B550 motherboard paired with 32GB of Ripjaws RAM for $80. The components are going into an Intel system than doesn't support Win 11 so I already have the case, 500W PSU and an RTX 3050 8GB. Scenario's like this AM4 makes sense at the right price. If your spending more than $200 on a system I'd just go AM5. DDR4 prices are also a deterrent for AM4.

x3d can give quite a big uplift to 1% lows though, resulting in smoother output. I'm definitely a little cpu limited on a 5070ti at 1440p, by only 5-10% on the top end, but 1% lows would improve by 20% or more with an x3d. Unfortunately, the only way I'm getting a 5800x3d is on the used market.
Agree, going from a non-x3D cpu to x3d cpu is a massive uplift. Much smoother even with existing GPU. Speaking from xoerience here went from 5800x to 5800x3d and couldn't believe the difference in gaming. It was generational.

ONLY buy the Ryzen 5000 CPU series for upgrading an existing build ONLY.
Yeah...this is for my 3rd grader's desktop so that he can do iReady Math and Reading without getting on my desktop, maybe email his grandma. He was happy with the 7th gen i7, but that's starting to have reliability issues.

I'm just looking for CPU + mobo under $200. That said, what I really want is the $55 Ryzen 5 5500, a $50 motherboard, and to reuse my old RAM.

I was actually looking at upgrading my 5600 to a 5800xt because the 5700x3ds are gone, these are cheap, and I need a better cooler, which this includes. I was going to upgrade my RAM too, but I'm running 3600mhz and don't want to downgrade. Annoying.

You're missing a factor in your AM4 calculation.
The 5800XT does not have graphics while the newer 7600X does. You need to add a graphics card to your calculation. That brings it more expensive than the AM5 solution.
Full stop.

For this price this is decent for a new rig as well..it would pair well with something like a 7900gre or 9060xt

X3d is nice, but unnecessary. I'd pick GPU upgrade 9 times out of 10 for better performance. I'd be very doubtful that an x3d chip will net you more performance than a similar GPU upgrade would get you.

I myself upgraded to a 5950xt pretty cheaply because I was giving my 5600x to my son, and the more cores at a lower price were a much better buy/price decision than getting an x3d chip that has limited performance returns at higher resolution than 1080p
An x3d cpu will give you a lot more frames ..
A 5800x3d would be 20-40fps faster than your 5950xt

No it doesn't, cause the graphics in the 7600x isn't for anything intensive..
You'll need a graphics card with either one

At what resolution, though? Most gains that are of major significance were usually reported at 1080p, and dropped off pretty quickly at 1440p and higher. Now, I haven't looked at any BF6 tests because it's brand new, but gains that large were usually for older games at 1080p.

More than a few years. AM6 will use AM5 motherboards.
On the other hand, if you have DDR4 RAM to repurpose, an AM4 CPU/mobo might be a decent cheap path for a new build.

Price is back up to $169.99…
Have a backup PC running 5600G w/3060TI… was thinking to upgrade the CPU. Oh well… it's not a terrible pairing.

So in some recent games like helldivers, bf6, or any MP games that have a lot of players and things going on all at once. The 3d cache is a huge boost over the extra cores.
