I was looking for a good reason to replace my 2019 Nvidia Shield, but this is not it.

With the direction they're going with Android, I really doubt it.

The onn. brand Google TV boxes are much cheaper. The 8 GB 4k box is $20 and the 32 GB one is $45. You can also sideload apps without issue.

I've been using the $20 one for a few years now, and I still use a 1080p one from a while back.

I have to agree. The Onn 4k Pro is $30 cheaper than this and essentially gives you an identical experience.

Anyone know whether it's possible to connect a external hard drive with media to the Google Streamer? Does it support playing .mkv files natively? Thanks.

I'll never understand why Google or any other company in the streaming stick business has yet to make a remote that functions like a cable TV remote with YoutubeTV. Is it that hard to come up with a channel guide button or a "my recordings" button?

The best Onn streamer is the 4K Plus with ~681 (Geekbench 5) running Amlogic S905X5M CPU at 2.5 GHz.

Yup, they're basically the same specs. I bought one of these when they first came out, but quickly returned it and got the Onn.

I went with this for gbit Ethernet over onn. Got it for under 50 on Amazon warehouse and so far it's been good. Replaced og Nvidia shield which had been crashing more and more. Shield was the longest daily use tech I've owned.
Also this has matter support which I wanted to start getting into.

Yes. We just finally replaced our chrome cast (the first kind with a remote) whatever that is with one of these bc I gave up waiting for Apple to come out with a new Apple TV for $30. I think I'm going to replace my parents' chrome casts for Christmas too.
It's not perfect but for $30 it's so much faster than the old ones were.
