Cruise ships are banning these to protect their revenue stream. You won't have to wonder if you just check the prohibited list in the FAQ of the cruise line you are intending to use.

Thanks! I just bought one from Best Buy last week. They also lowered their price to $230. Price matched and received a refund for the difference

This is the portable one which is $299 on Starlink website. The free one is stationary, has the dish and router separate, consumes about 2X the power but does have some additional features etc.

Wonder if we can take this on a cruise ship. Would need a balcony cabin. Probably not worth the effort

You can, there are some limitations for being outside of the country you're signed up in but I think it's like 30 days. Some cruise ships actually use Starlink on board now, so I would think service should be pretty decent!

all of the cruise carriers have now started putting in the contract that these are not allowed on board and will be confiscated if found in luggage.

Duh, yep not worth the effort. I found that esim worked pretty well and much cheaper than cruise internet package.

There are esim that works with cruise ships depend on destinations. The one I know worked is gigsky. Check their cruise ship plans. https://www.gigsky.com/data-cruises-cruises-only

Ooh, just under the wire for 30-day price refund adjustment on my home depot purchase at $299 last month. Was a fast 5 minute process via the live chat and they only asked for my order number. Thanks for posting!
