all of the cruise carriers have now started putting in the contract that these are not allowed on board and will be confiscated if found in luggage.

There are esim that works with cruise ships depend on destinations. The one I know worked is gigsky. Check their cruise ship plans. https://www.gigsky.com/data-cruises-cruises-only

Cruise ships are banning these to protect their revenue stream. You won't have to wonder if you just check the prohibited list in the FAQ of the cruise line you are intending to use.

Wonder if we can take this on a cruise ship. Would need a balcony cabin. Probably not worth the effort
Note that the $160/month "Roam - unlimited" plan does not include usage on oceans. You can enable "ocean mode" with a simple toggle switch, but it's $2/GB when toggled on (regardless of if you are actually on an ocean).

Great deal if you need something like this.

I work in mountainous areas without cell reception and mine keeps me online (if I want to be). Same on road trips. Texting, wifi-calling, whatever. My latency is typically in the mid-20s, but I have seen it in the high teens on occasion. Speeds are anywhere from 30-200Mbps, but I also don't always have it aligned as I carry it in my vehicles. Fast enough for anything I'm doing, though. I've ben impressed with it working during storms, too. Obviously slower, but still.
I wish it had come with either a Type-C port for power input, or the cable. I did have to buy that separately and the official cable was about 45 bucks, but it is pretty long (15M?). I did have it running from AC power on my power station at first, but it wasn't as efficient.

Also, I paid the original price, wish I had waited. I just needed it.

In for one. Thanks for the post! I purchased the larger Gen 3 kit and placed it in my house. Initially wanting to tote that around, but circumstances didn't allow it. With this, I can put it in my backpack or vehicle and get going reliably. $5 bucks a month for maintenance mode is an absolute no-brainer for me. Especially if we can text and call from anywhere in the US.

This is really great information and mirrors some of my use case. I intend to run it off of an Ecoflow when necessary. I'll pick up the car adapter and look at other options.

Yep, they scan all luggage and will pull these and allow you to pick them up after the cruise.
A better option is a 'sim at sea' e-sim plan for your phone.

Be sure to check the fees on starlink.com when you input your address. My area is apparently now "high demand" and they want a one-time $1000 fee to start a new account.

I live in a somewhat rural area so had been thinking about getting this to activate Roam w/standby just when I need it, but apparently they don't want my business.

Use the home depot link on aafes not their product search.

That's what I did. After a few retries AAFES payment finally went through. AAFES would not do price adjustment despite homedepot would (called HD, transferred to AAFES because they handled payment), so I had to return the one bought last month to home depot, then call AAFES for refund. Customer service / return is always a pita with AAFES

Ooh, just under the wire for 30-day price refund adjustment on my home depot purchase at $299 last month. Was a fast 5 minute process via the live chat and they only asked for my order number.
I ordered from Home Depot via the AAFES site and received my Mini on October 7th. I called Home Depot support today, November 10th, and they're refunding me the $70 difference. I didn't bring up the 30-day verbiage, just the fact I wanted a price adjustment, which they did. One of the few phone painless calls I've dealt with recently.

sim at sea is not cheap, why not just pay for wifi while at sea and use cheap travel eSIM, lower price for much more data?

How are these different than the free system?
There's no free systems. You're given a free rental that requires an eventual return.
