The Onkyo TX RZ30 stands out as a strong value 9.2 channel receiver with Dirac room correction, THX certification, and enough power for most home theater setups. It is framed as a modern alternative to pricier Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, and Anthem models, especially at this price. The main caveat is that Dirac setup has a learning curve, and the advertised PayPal Pay in 4 cashback has been inconsistent for some purchases. A solid pick if you want current features without stepping up to the RZ70.

  • PayPal Pay-in-4 can reduce the effective purchase price to about $652 after tax for some buyers.

  • Dirac room correction can be a strong feature path for users who follow the calibration process carefully.

  • The receiver can be rated at 100W per channel at 8 ohms for two channels under the FTC standard.

  • THX certification can support accurate delivery at reference-level loudness without distortion or clipping.

  • PayPal Pay-in-4 and PayPal Pay Later promos can fail to qualify at checkout even when the offer appears active.

  • Dirac calibration can be confusing due to a learning curve and conflicting information.

  • The deal may be time-sensitive because the $750 pricing history has been questioned and the prior promo link may be dead.

  • The 100W at 8 ohms rating can apply only to two channels rather than all channels simultaneously.

Its 100w per channel at 8 ohms.
Well there is more to it than that.
This is THX certified which they say basically means:
"The receiver must accurately deliver THX reference level, which is 85 dB with 20 dB of headroom, at 105 dB for each channel without distortion or clipping.".

From personal experience I would say this will drive pretty anything their RZ50 can.

Thought I would be getting 20% back. Nope. PayPay completely screwed me on this deal. Not just me though, thousands of people. All over reddit and elsewhere how people never got their rewards and PayPal just told me and everyone else "shrug". A lot of people got their rewards, but TONS of people also got screwed. fark paypal.
Ah damn. Thanks for the update. Hopefully, I get my cash back, but not gonna hold my breath now.

Check your PayPal activity. My 20% showed up as pending the day after purchase. On top of that, the 20% is on the full amount, so you in effect get 20% back on taxes! This is what my activity looks like:
Pending points
20% cash back on one Pay Later purchase with PayPal
16312 points
Your points are on the way! They should arrive within 90 days.

Sucks that the discount didn't work for others but you have to make sure to save the "Pay in 4" promo offer first and you have to see "Pay in 4" as a payment option. For me, the "Pay in 4" showed up under the Pay Later options and it was distinctly separate from "pay in installments".

FYI Dirac has a bit of learning curve.

The calibration process causes a lot of confusion not to mention all the misinformation.

This is thee best process to follow in my experience.

Thank you for the link, @supermanrob. I am confused about some of it though.

At the 2:10 mark, it mentions to set your speaker distances and volumes. I understand distance, but how do you know what volume to set speakers at? Also, isn't this usually done by the receiver's calibration process using the included mic?

Later in the video, at 5:50 mark, it says to "play one of your speakers". What does that mean exactly? Are we supposed to play some music or have a movie on?

My RZ30 is out for deliver so I'm looking forward to setting it up with Dirac today or tomorrow. Thanks again for all the great, sound (no pun intended), advice you've shared in other posts.

That video can be confusing (as you've found).

The best step-by-step I found was here:

Thanks for the link! When it says to adjust speakers at least 20dB above the noise floor, what level was the noise floor in the example?

Yes, as commonly mentioned, Dirac has a bit of a learning curve.

In basic terms on the 2:10 mark.
In the past, you would use a sound level meter at MLP and adjust all the speakers to match based on the meter.
There are apps that you can use as a meter and you use the units test tones is the simplest way.
You only need to do that for the reasons he mentioned.

At the 5:50 mark.If you notice just past that mark he plays another speaker by clicking the triangle at the bottom of the speaker bar.
That's how you play each speaker and it has a timer.

As he pointed out your room floor & setting speakers to it is critical.

Unless your "Atmos" speakers are reference, I would suggest using your lowest sounding surround speaker for that setting.
Keep in mind DL doesn't correct your sub(s)or integration bass between them and your speakers.
Bass Control is a godsend with all that ime.
Lucky for you, you have access to it!

Ultimately what sounds best is what you think.
A main advantage to Dirac is you can make all the adjustments within it, especially if you have Bass Control!

Noise floor is denoted under the Mic gain and is -47.3 dB in the example. I like to use a 25dB margin myself instead of the 20dB mentioned. Everyone has different levels of what is "too loud" I guess.

You're right. Just checked my PayPal activity log and it shows the same as yours. Sweet deal. $640ish after tax is the best price I've ever seen for this receiver.

The RZ30 is spec'ed for 4 - 16 ohms. I was thinking of getting some Triangle Borea BR09 floorstanding speakers. They are rated at 8 ohm nominal impedance, but is said to sometimes dip to below 4 ohms. Does anyone know how much of an issue that will be with the RZ30?

Or should I go with a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 12.4 instead (impedance of 4.5 to 8 ohm)? The Wharfedale and Triangle are same price right now. Thank you!

Edit: Nevermind, Onkyo Suppprt said the RZ30 should be fine with the Borea BR09 as long as there's sufficient ventilation and I don't play at extreme volume too long.

Points settled today and I was able to initiate the cash back transfer to my bank account. I am surprised everything processed so quickly. Thanks, PayPal!

I wonder what happens if someone transfers the points out and then returns the purchase (which I won't be doing, but just wondering how that works).
