That only applies if you finance the device, not if you pay the full amount from the start.

This topic has come up in every spectrum mobile deal, and while the terms seem a bit ambiguous I've yet to see a single person subject to this while paying off the device at the beginning.

Per Spectrum.com

"To request an unlock code from Spectrum Mobile:

The device must be purchased from, and activated on, a Spectrum Mobile line.
The device must be paid off in full.
The device cannot be reported lost or stolen or involved with fraudulent activity.
Your Spectrum Mobile device must be active for 60 days and in good standing, with no outstanding payments."

Spectrum does not use traditional contracts for its services.

Anyone familiar with when the "Mobile Device Balance" updates on My Spectrum? Monthly payments are correct (36/mo @ 11.11 pre-trade-in) but the total balance owed on the phone shows $972.xx... and it will allow me to place the full payment.

That balance has to be zero for me to unlock after 60days... hopefully i didnt' commit to 36/mo worth of mobile service in my contract to get that price...
So I didn't real the fine print here and should have just paid them the $400 upfront.

Had to follow-up with Spectrum on this. You are locked in to 36months of contracts to get this price. The trade-in credit applies instantly but the $600 promo requires full term.

I'll be returning. And gonna have to fight for the $50 open device return fee.

e: I can't even activate my old device on this account at the moment... Lordy

I went in store (North Carolina) and got this deal. But still had to pay over $80 in tax (based on full value of the phone).
So they decided to change this time by getting more tax money from us. I believe this is wrong. We should have complained to them. They should charge tax on $400 instead of $1000.

Agree. I wonder who keeps all that extra "tax" collected - the state, or Spectrum?

Can not promise, but the way it worked in the past is that you pay the full payment to spectrum and then once it shows as a credit on your account you call or chat and ask them to credit the card on file back the full credit amount. Then after unlock you can close the line. Highly recommend to port the number as then there are no issues with the cancellation.

good luck!

Anyone do this trade in store in NY? If so, what did they charge in tax? Have a feeling they don't carry this in store and only doing in store trades moving forward. Thanks!

I'm in NY and in the past, I've only paid tax on the cost after the trade in. This year, I traded in my S23+ for an S25+ and paid $8 in sales tax.

I just went to 2 stores and neither had it.

You can pay the remaining balance on the phone (including $600 promo and trade credits) and they'll immediately refund it back to you ($600+remaining trade credits) have done this before with the trade bonuses on 36 month plans. Just call to make sure.

When can I get the phone unlocked on the last day of month 2 without getting charged another month?

Thanks, I stopped by my local store and they only had the 9a and the entire 10 series. Don't think we will find these in store.
When I did a trade for the flip 7 during the summer, I only paid around $10 in tax. Hoping that continues

It all depends on your billing cycle. They do not prorate mobile accounts when you cancel.
Many people end up paying for 3 months. If you don't have a free line, you can lower your plan to the cheapest one which is $20 which has almost no data.

Something wrong. I pretend to trade in Motorola G 5G 128gb 2025 and it gave $231 trade in value. I then go all the way until the last step to submit, I see the total value is $482 and $82 tax. I pass, not worth it. The Moto g 5g 128gb 2025 costed $60 at Walmart. So the out of pocket is $251 + $60 = $311
I did the curbside pickup for that same phone for $39.99 before tax. But damn that's not it

Yeah high tax almost kills the deal. The best worth trade in I've seen from this post is spending around $150 at Metro, trade in for around $200 + 200, total out of pocket little over $200

Interesting. I paid for the device in full - $454 including tax - are they going to charge me the $600 if I cancel before 36 months?
