You can do an eSIM swap to get it unlocked instantly with ATT phones but it's YMMV.

You can also ask CS nicely and they will unlock your phone if you have already paid the full price. The new Here are the steps for eSIM swap and some other information around plan cancellation etc. The new ATT policy says automatic unlock after 60 days without active service just like Verizon and I can't vouch whether that's true or not.

After buying the phone in Walmart in installments, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.

ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.

Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device. You will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night.

When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network.

Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement.

Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

Now go to ATT unlock portal (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Sucks that everyone has the same question and there is still no answer. Do I need a service plan? or can I just buy this, pay it off of and get it unlock immediately or at least in a few days?

Were they bill credits so you were locked in? That's the rub usually.

I currently have AT&T unlimited plan and want to upgrade (no trade in) and use on my existing line but I don't want monthly payments and just to pay it off, what's the steps for that? Not worried about unlocking either.

Thank you for sharing. I don't know if I'm the unluckiest person, but I couldn't swap the eSIM on phone, and somehow I activated the phone on December 9th. However, the device's warranty expired in January 2025. Crazy!!! Btw I'll try your swap method, hopefully a little luck will come my way.
do not worry about the warranty, you can call or chat with apple to reset it. I did that before and it was easy. just go through this mess of unlocking first, then contact apple.

I'll summarize my experience with purchasing these phone on existing post-paid unlimited plan.

I initially selected 'Upgrade' below the 'Already have AT&T Wireless?' box that shows up when you go to add a phone to Walmart cart. Going through that process it was showing some random "Data Plan: MOBILE SHARE DEVICE $55/mo" for the service plan. I didn't want to risk losing an older plan I have so I aborted that approach and just chose the 'Add a line' option.

I ended up adding three lines which I didn't intend to keep. Like you I just wanted the phones.

Timeline:

Ordered phones 12/3

Phones delivered, activated, and paid off online on 12/6. Account showed online option to pay off devices so I didn't have to use chat.

Tried eSIM swaps on 12/7. Initially had some issues which I ultimately attributed to the 2nd gen iPhone SE I was trying to swap eSIM to. It is supposed to be eSIM compatible, but wouldn't handle the phone to phone eSIM swap (would always route me to ATT account login to do the swap, but that didn't work either). Ultimately got it to work for two of the phones using an iPhone 11 and a 12 Pro Max.

Was able to unlock successfully after the eSIM swap following Gadgetnerd's instructions here: https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=180188806&postcount=169

On 12/8, I cancelled the two lines for which I had successfully unlocked the new iPhones. Did this via chat. It was a bit painful wading through all efforts by CSR to understand why I was cancelling and trying to make offers to get me to stay, but lines were cancelled.

I did a rinse/repeat of above for the last line, except decided to port it out to US Mobile which cost me $5 (cheapest plan option), but quite frankly was much faster and painless.

I don't have a final bill yet, but from estimated bill summary posted on my account it appears I may pay for a few days of pro-rated service and they may try to charge me for one of the 3 line activation fees (maybe for the line ported out?). Won't know until I get the final bill and will try to get rid of activation fees if any show up.

All in all very successful on getting 3 new phones unlocked for use on my current account or to port out with if I decide to change carrier.

I ran into this too with all my phones I purchased. Will try contacting Apple to get purchase date updated so warranty doesn't show expired. If you have any suggests for best method to do that, please pass on...

Yes, SoCal. Seems like the phones are shipping out of California so it was quick for me.

Ohio here. Ordered iPhone 15 256 black on Monday evening. It's Thursday morning now and the order status still shows preparing. I'm also checking my FedEx account and there's not even a label yet.

Edit: it's Thursday now and the phone has shipped. Still in CA.

Do you have to unlock both IMEI numbers of the new iPhone or just the first IMEI number?

I only requested unlock for the first IMEI.on the phones then Carrier Lock status showed no SIM restrictions after unlock was approved. I did a network reset after receiving unlock approval email from ATT just to make sure I was seeing latest carrier lock status.

Thanks for that info. Am a bit hesitant to give that a try as am afraid to screw something up and but stuck with an extra line. Was hoping someone did a straight up Upgrade on their account and what's the final result. What was your total payout price since I think it charges taxes on full price?

Okay. I just want to make sure that the second IMEI number won't be a problem later on.
Could someone who has already unlocked his iPhone 15+ check to see if he can use his second IMEI by adding another carrier to the phone?

You need to wait overnight to send unlock request

Check my I16 pro max timeline

11/16 5:05 PM Purchased in store

11/16 5:09 PM Received the egift card

11/16 6:11 PM signed up ATT account

11/16 6:26 PM completed esim swap, Received ATT text and Email

11/16 6:49 PM made full payment, Received ATT Email

11/17 12:21 AM made unlock request with different name, phone number and email

11/17 12:23 AM received unlocked approval

11/17 1:53 PM ported out, received ATT confirmation. Account canceled.

11/23 11:40AM Received ATT bill $53.77.

11/23 11:55AM $45.67 fees credited
When you port out your number, does that terminate your AT&T line and pro-rate your first month bill automatically?
