The first movie was great. Most of the characters are wonderful and I liked how they were getting developed. The Dumbledore plot was a huge disappointment, i didn't like where they were taking it and the entire series could've gone a completely different direction focusing on Newt and the other characters instead of Dumbledore and it would have been amazing.
It's sad we won't get a completed set in this franchise, but with the issues with writing, production, and casting - it really deserved to be cancelled and personally, i blame WB and Rowling - they screwed up something that could've been really fun and enjoyable.

Yeah it would have been a lot better if they did a couple of "Fantastic Beasts" movies focusing on Newt and magical creatures. Then a completely separate series about Dumbledore vs Grindelwald. And the recasting of Grindelwald didn't help matters either.
