This Anova Mini Lite is a low cost way to try sous vide and get basic temperature control for home cooking. The free Bluetooth app can start and run the cooker from a phone, and the subscription is tied to WiFi access and extra features rather than basic use. The main drawbacks are the lack of physical buttons and reports that app connection and monitoring can be unreliable. It is a simple starter pick if app based control is acceptable.
home cooks who want to try sous vide for the first time because at $20 it's described as a great way to "give sous vide a try."
people who are okay using the free Bluetooth app to start and run the cooker because commenters say the app is free and can control the unit via Bluetooth, with the subscription mainly for WiFi access and extra features they wouldn't use.
renters or people cooking in a temporary room who want to save money by cooking at work instead of eating out because one commenter said using it enough saved far more than the cost by "cooking" where they were renting a room for work during the week.
buyers who want a backup plan for their sous vide setup because one owner said they use the free Bluetooth app and plan to buy another unit as a backup.
people who want to avoid app subscriptions for control because reviewers complained there's no option to use it without a paid subscription for app control (they returned it after realizing it).
buyers who need reliable monitoring and stable Bluetooth connections because commenters said the app may not stay connected for monitoring and they had to use a pairing workaround when it wouldn't connect.
buyers who are wary of Anova's app/subscription model because one commenter warned that Anova charges a subscription fee for app-based remote control and suggested avoiding the brand.
people who don't want to rely on extra hardware to control the cooker because one commenter said it's only worth it if you have a Flipper Zero to control it.
The app can be used for free over Bluetooth to start and run the cooker. The subscription is for Wi‑Fi access and extra features, so basic sous vide control does not require paying monthly or yearly.
At $20, it is a low-cost way to try sous vide and can be worth it if you are comfortable using the free Bluetooth app. The main caveat is that app-based control and connection reliability matter because there are no physical controls.
It appears to have no on-device buttons, so control depends on the app. That makes the Bluetooth connection and app reliability important if you want to set temperature or monitor a cook.
Anova reversed its plan to end support for older devices and says all versions of its products will continue to be supported indefinitely. That reduces the risk of the cooker becoming unusable if you rely on the app.
Have this item, and that's incorrect. I have the app (free) and can start/run it via bluetooth from my phone. The subscription (about $10/year, if I recall) gets you wifi access and some other features I wouldn't use anyway.
In one of the other threads (Morningsave or Amazon) about this someone pointed out that the App won't be supported in the future. I'm not terribly tech savvy, but if I have the basic app on my phone, and don't change phones (or can still download the old app onto a new phone), and I use it to just turn on the unit and set the temp, shouldn't it continue to work even without 'support'? Even so, I've used mine enough that it's saved FAR more (over buying food out) than it cost by 'cooking' where I'm renting a room for work during the week

The comment that this wont be supported in the future is false see link: https://anovaculinary.com/blogs/b...0supported.
TLDR: Anova Culinary has reversed its decision to stop mobile app support for its older sous vide devices. The company's CEO announced in January 2025 that they will continue to support all versions of their products indefinitely after receiving significant customer feedback

some of the comments from Walmart's product review:
"i knew this was controlled by an app, however i didn't realize it could only be used by paying a subscription service. thats sound like a massive rip off to me. they don't have an option to use it without the subscription for just turning on and setting the timer. i returned it as soon as i found that out. worthless"
"No on device controls ... so one would think that Anova would make a reliable app to control their device line ... ah ... not so much. You can pair it relatively easily, however the app won't stay connected to the device for monitoring. I did discover a workaround for that, and I haven't used it enough to know if it's reliable. When it won't connect, open a setting window for bluetooth, and forget the device. When you go back to the Anova app, you'll probably be prompted to pair again. YMMV. Good Luck if your choosing this brand."

I own one- Just use the FREE app with Bluetooth. I'll be buying another as a backup.

You're probably referring to this Sous Vide device. I don't have it. I didn't claim that was the issue with it either. I said, "the oven" and I can confirm that is indeed the case and is widely supported. A quick google search will show you that.
Regardless, do you really want to support a company that is doing this?
Next up, your blender will have a subscription fee or your stove top. Of course you do what's right for you.
