Firestick SELECT uses the new Vega OS. Vega is a non Android based/forked Linux OS. You may have no issues sideloading you newly purchased NON SELECT FireStick Fire OS (Android) but it's not likely you sideloaded on the new select stick.

You have the new select version? You have a developer account with amazon?
Amazon was very specific with its wording when it stated that "only apps from the Amazon Appstore are available for download" on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select's product page. While it's true that you can't download and install apps from alternate sources on Amazon's Vega OS streamer, like you can on every Fire TV before it, there is a way to sideload apps. However, even if there were apps worth sideloading, which there aren't, the device and process are so locked down that it's not worth doing.
To sideload an app on Vega OS, you have to first have an Amazon Developer Account. That's because to even just reveal developer options on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which is required for sideloading apps, you have to register the device as a developer device under your Amazon developer account. Only then will selecting "Fire TV Stick" seven times on the device's About screen reveal developer options.
With the developer options menu revealed, you can now enable developer mode, which causes the device to restart. There is no option to allow apps from unknown sources, like there is on Android-based Fire TVs. To sideload, your only option is to connect the Fire TV Stick 4K Select to a computer via a USB cable. With Amazon's developer tools installed on your computer, your device registered with your developer account, and the device connected via USB to your computer, you can now run a command to send a Vega OS app from your computer to the Vega OS-based Fire TV.
While those are far more hoops to jump through to sideload an app than on any previous Fire TV model, they're doable for a determined enthusiast who wants to break out of Amazon's garden. The real issue with sideloading on Vega OS starts with using a sideloaded app.
