That was software lock, but these firestick have a totally brand new OS thats not android. So sideloading apks are no longer a thing for this
How are you so sure? Anybody will throw 10.00 for this thing and if what you said is true just return it. Problem solved.

That's what people were saying last year when it was on sale. Still works great for me for sideloading.

Firestick SELECT uses the new Vega OS. Vega is a non Android based/forked Linux OS. You may have no issues sideloading you newly purchased NON SELECT FireStick Fire OS (Android) but it's not likely you sideloaded on the new select stick.

The Fire Stick Max is $60, you can use this $10 version and later use it to get 20% trade-in discount when the Max is on sale.
The max drops to $35 and $40 all the time. No need to buy and trade for 20 percent off.

I have this version and the new Max version, purchased in October, sideloaded onto both.

You have the new select version? You have a developer account with amazon?

Amazon was very specific with its wording when it stated that "only apps from the Amazon Appstore are available for download" on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select's product page. While it's true that you can't download and install apps from alternate sources on Amazon's Vega OS streamer, like you can on every Fire TV before it, there is a way to sideload apps. However, even if there were apps worth sideloading, which there aren't, the device and process are so locked down that it's not worth doing.

To sideload an app on Vega OS, you have to first have an Amazon Developer Account. That's because to even just reveal developer options on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which is required for sideloading apps, you have to register the device as a developer device under your Amazon developer account. Only then will selecting "Fire TV Stick" seven times on the device's About screen reveal developer options.

With the developer options menu revealed, you can now enable developer mode, which causes the device to restart. There is no option to allow apps from unknown sources, like there is on Android-based Fire TVs. To sideload, your only option is to connect the Fire TV Stick 4K Select to a computer via a USB cable. With Amazon's developer tools installed on your computer, your device registered with your developer account, and the device connected via USB to your computer, you can now run a command to send a Vega OS app from your computer to the Vega OS-based Fire TV.

While those are far more hoops to jump through to sideload an app than on any previous Fire TV model, they're doable for a determined enthusiast who wants to break out of Amazon's garden. The real issue with sideloading on Vega OS starts with using a sideloaded app.

Look at the deal this way. If you need a new replacement or a backup voice remote, here's a chance to get an OEM one for $10 instead of the $30 or so Amazon charges for the real item. Toss the Firestick or better yet, keep it for a future trade-in. The 3rd party knock-off remotes are junk, notice the frequently returned notice on the knock-off remotes pages. I made that mistake and am in the process of returning it. So I am getting the real deal for the price of a knock-off and have a firestick in the bank for a future trade-in. That's a great deal, a nice Christmas gift from SheriffMamba!

If my tv is 1080p do you think it's worth it?
depends on if your current firestick is running slow as the Max has more internal storage and RAM.

Google is going to lock down android soon as well and only allow certain apps from their appstore to be loaded onto android devices (like firetv sticks, phones, tablets, etc). Is there a linux based alternative or some other way around this "Apple-fication" of the Android operating system?

I didn't see the Select part. Thanks for pointing that out. Didn't know. Probably time to invest in something different once the Max's I have get to be too slow or die. I'm assuming they will move everything over to this Vega at some point?

Same here.... said promotion was not valid, and didn't update the price. But when I reloaded my cart, suddenly the promotion was active.

I thought this was going to be snappy it uses Linux instead of Android like a roku. Apps still take up a lot of room and navigating is slow. The remote works with regular firesticks which is why I bought it. But this device is so bad you can't even leave a review on it on Amazon.

It's starting to appear now on sticks. Just appeared this past week warning third party apps will be disabled. Cinema no longer working
