Melatonin can cause dose-dependent side effects, not horrible but bothersome (like night sweats). Unfortunately, the active ingredient is super cheap, so companies compete for your business by unnecessarily increasing dose levels (5 mg very common these days). And lots of fly-by-night very-lightly-regulated companies in this supplement sector. Not sure if still available, but Trader Joe's used to have a 0.5 mg (500 mcg) dissolvable peppermint-flavored product, and that provided plenty of active ingredient. Melatonin has really only been shown to help induce sleep (help you fall asleep faster), it hasn't been proven to do much else - e.g., help you sustain or get quality sleep. Source: worked at a major health care company that did relatively deep scientific dives in this area before investing in it. YMMV.

There's been recent finding it negatively impacts cardiovascular health too but I rather die then not sleep.
