Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

so gangwe going with amazon?
I went with Amazon because the $10 Amazon GC is easier to use than the $10 TT credit. I typically owe taxes so I mail in my state return instead of paying to e-file.

Can't buy two at a time, so make individual orders. For example if you're doing your child's taxes, and they have a Roth IRA, you need the premier with state. I think I was duped for $140 last year while filling theirs out.

First time purchasing using the Fido & Amex discount. I'm getting to the download Deluxe Desktop version and getting "TurboTax Deluxe +
TurboTax Advantage" auto renew, and TurboTax Deluxe. Same price. Can I turn off the auto renew and is the Advantage version the desktop version plus extras?
Ignore the Advantage thing... just Intuit trying to sell more stuff you don't need.

Yeah, I asked AI again.
Intuit has made it so confusing for customers that even AI can't figure out what's going on.
Deluxe 100% does everything. It has slightly less help for very specific items in the interview.

You can do all that with one copy of deluxe desktop. It allows 5 federal e-files and unlimited printed filings. State e-file is extra, but can print and mail for free. If your child is in a different state, you'd have to pay for another state software download though.

List of states with free e-file directly on their website [thefinancebuff.com]
(note, you will have to transfer the numbers from your completed TT state forms or just do the whole thing on your state website if it has a useable interface).

Does anyone know if the price actually includes e-file? Some of these other sites let you use the software only to find you must pay more to e-file.
You need to be more specific, the price includes Federal e-file it does not include State e-file.

It includes one state download - that means it will prepare a tax return for one state. If you want to e-file that state return you must pay (unless you live in a state that has mandated free e-file)

Yep so many people convinced that they must buy Premier and believe that Deluxe is basically a computer version of a stack of IRS forms that you must fill-out yourself.

Intuit must be so proud that their advertising has been so successful.

I fell for it many years myself. Sadly, it's all the same software where they are literally hiding a small number of questions and help screens from Deluxe users in order to justify the existence of Premier. Thankfully, last time they truly tried to limit Deluxe, there was a near mutiny, and they had to go back on that decision. That said, I think the days of the download version are numbered. They are doing everything they can to transition everyone to the online version.

Sounds like Intuit is doing exactly that using a partnership with OpenAI/ChatGPT

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/18/i...b13d59693d
It says they are looking at ChatGPT to give "financial insight" and to provide essentially a chatbot (i.e. bye bye human support). Neither of this is doing your taxes.

How does a LLM Chatbot AI make the process substantially different? All the steps still need to occur such as provide access to your accounts and retrieve financial data, ask questions about your situation, ask you to review what it calculates. etc.

AI is great but not seeing how this substantially changes the game.

Yea, when I installed my TT version this year the first thing it did was ask me why I picked the download version over the online version - like they are trying to understand the motivation for why anyone wouldn't use the online version instead.

I'll keep using the download version until they don't offer it anymore and at that point I'll have to make some hard decisions, doing my return online doesn't sit well with me.

Ummm with TT desktop, it works exactly the same. They ask questions and it populates the form, which you can view or edit any time you want.
Let me be more clear. TT asks questions and it populates the forms, but you dont know which form it populated when you enter a value. You can view or edit the form, if you can figure out which forms it populated. H&RB shows you the form and the location of the entry when you answer the question. Doesnt work exactly the same.

Specific example. The TT forums are full of questions why the educational credits forms are not populated correctly since you enter the answers to the interview. Then you look at the form and it is wrong. You dont actually see the entry in the form when you type the answer, you need to bring up the form and it is wrong. In HRB, when you type the answer, you see the entry in the form change. Turns out that in TT the entry doesnt change the form unless you go thru the entire section interview completely.

We won't know until it's fully enabled. But for a lot of people, ChatGPT can do a lot better job reading the tax code than the average taxpayer. But undoubtedly, they will also be training their models on the data you submit to them. You can likely avoid this with the desktop version, but I doubt it will be easy to opt-out with the online version. Bottom line, all of these companies are going to be training their AI models with our data, hopefully in an anonymized way. And hopefully, that will turn out to be useful and secure. Hopefully.

Shame it's web only.
FreeTax only imports documents from your computer. I'm sure this has confused people. It will not seamlessly pull all your tax info from your brokerage firm.
