Great beginner drone... Just be careful, because there is no obstacle avoidance.

You attach your phone to it for all controls and to see the live feed and recording. Don't think you can fly it without attaching a phone/tablet

TACO. The administration threatened to block them and then decided at the last minute to completely reverse course and not do anything at all.

Just to clarify what is essential said here (mostly correct), new foreign-made drone models will require FCC certification and if you don't get it (which you won't) then you cannot legally sell that drone model in the US and you cannot legally fly that drone model in the US. As long as the model has FCC certification, it is legal to sell and fly in the US regardless if it's a new model or an old model. Purchasing models that have FCC certification is allowed forever regardless of when the stock runs out or not, you can get one from anywhere in the world and it's legal; old stock, new stock....doesn't matter.

What matter is if you are able to get it into the country or not and we all know it is going to get tougher and tougher to get a drone thru customs over the years and months and weeks ahead, not because they are banned but because customs is incompetent. Remember there is no such thing as "when we are out of stock, no new shipments are allowed." Until the government changes its mind, FCC certified drones are ok forever and without FCC certification, it's never allowed under most any circumstances.
this seems kind of silly, when things that affect certification can be controlled in software.
Especially when the app (at least in the case of android) needs to be side loaded.

I'm new to the drone space, is it better to get the fly more combo or just the base drone? Any who bought this can speak to how often you've flown and do you find you need more batteries for more fly time? Or is this one of those purchases where you fly a couple times and once the new toy experience wears off and it just sits on the shelf collecting dust?

Purchased this and took it out flying the next day. It lost signal, landed in the middle of the road, and got run over. Sent it out maybe 1/4th of a mile. Still waiting on DJIs response

Was return to home enabled? Also did you wait for full GPS signal before taking off so that it knew where home was?

Yes return to home was enabled. It had synced to the location prior to taking off as well. I waited several minutes for it to return but it didn't. Drove to the area where it lost signal and it was in the middle of the road

Honestly, ive flown my mini 2 maybe 2-4 a year. I will take it with me when I go on vacation if it's an outdoorsy environment. Mine does sit in the shelf quite a while. I Honestly don't have as much time as I thought I would when I first bought it. I purchased mine from costco in bundle that included an extra battery and other things. Battery time is not great and is also affected by the way you fly so I would recommend at least a second battery. There's been a lot of changes in the laws regarding drone flying in other countries I've traveled to that require the dron to be registered or some countries that only allow citizens of that country to fly without a permit. Make sure you do your research before you fly.
