iPhone Air 256GB for $0 after up to $1000 in bill credits

I am currently using an iPhone 12 (128GB) with AT&T service. My phone is out of storage after all the holiday gatherings. I am looking to upgrade without a trade-in or any out-of-pocket cost. So this is a good deal for me, especially since the iPhone Air starts with 256GB of storage.

Some people stick with their carrier for years and years (like me). Why not get a free phone every 3 years? If you enjoy switching carriers whenever the wind changes direction, this deal is not for you.

Personally, if I had a full 128GB old iPhone, I'd probably not get the 256GB as you'd be almost half full after migrating data. Instead, pony up the extra $6/mo and get the 512GB version for more years of service.

In your opinion it's a "garbage phone". Lots of other people like it.

did you factor in a $1000 phone every three years into your cost analysis? Also the fact that unlike the cheapo plans don't have any decent deals on phones and the plans are pared down? I'm on a good, grandfathered plan with lots of bells and whistles on all the lines that just isn't available any more. Why change?

Saw this last night. 256 was sold out, but the 512GB Air is $5.99/mo and the 1TB is $10.99/mo. This is without a trade in. Got the 512 for my wife who wanted an air anyways. The math multiplied out to like $216 before the fees and whatever. Considering she's coming from a 13 Pro and actually WANTS an Air, I'm going to call this a win.

ATT has a nice deal for iPhone 16. The Air has a single camera, which is a major No-No for a flagship phone. Also, it has a low capacity battery, which is the other big thing for any phone. Essentially, as a "flagship" priced phone it is useless. There is no reason to get into a 3 year contract for it, when you can get into a contract for something better like a iPhone 17 on Verizon.
Also, if you run out of space - get a base 17 and pay for monthly iCloud - you'll get enough space and your photos and data will be backed up. It is a better deal than paying the same for a 512GB phone - that's too much data to risk.

get the iPhone 16 on ATT plan instead. The cameras and battery life will be better. Or, trade in yours at Apple and buy the 17 unlocked. If you want to keep the grandfathered ATT plan.

The 128gb 16 is $8/month and the 16e is $2/month compared to the 256gb iphone air for "free". Considering advantages and disadvantages of each model, hard to pass up free on a supposedly premium current model.

New customers shopping plans is a different story.

That's my point - the Air is not premium except the price. It's a novelty for Apple, prior that to Samsung and in both cases resulted in minimal sales. If you particularly want the Air because of its "slim" factor, that's another story.
Either way you are on an installment plan and IF you decide to break the installment, it'll be cheaper to payoff the 16 balance than the Air's. Similar logic for an accidental insurance of the phones - the payoff will cover more of the 16 cost. Unless you pay extra insurance from Apple for the Air but it does have a deductible, so you lose more...So expensive piece of electronics that is exposed to drops and risk of theft, I would insure it somehow...

Air base model has double the storage, titanium frame vs aluminum, ceramic shield front and back, a19pro vs a18 in 16, 120hz promotion vs 60hz in 16. Battery in 16 is supposedly worse, 16e is better. Besides bad single speaker and single camera, air seems premium to me, especially for free.
