The TX RZ30 is a strong value 9 channel AVR for Atmos setups, especially if you want Dirac room correction and dual independent sub outs. It is repeatedly framed as a better fit than pricier Denon and Yamaha alternatives when you do not need more than 9 channels, and the included calibration is praised for improving sound after setup. The main cautions are extra Dirac costs for Bass Control, a learning curve, and recurring concern about Onkyo HDMI reliability and shipping or warranty hassles. A solid pick for a modern 5.1.4 or 5.2.4 system if those tradeoffs fit.

  • The receiver can process up to nine channels, which fits common 5.1.4 Atmos-style layouts well.

  • The RZ30 includes Dirac Live Bass Control access via A1EVO Express, which can reduce the need for a separate $300 DLBC purchase.

  • The unit offers dual independent sub outputs, which supports more flexible subwoofer integration than models without that feature.

  • A coupon code reportedly applied successfully and reduced the total cost by $300 in at least one purchase.

  • Onkyo HDMI reliability is a concern based on past experiences, including HDMI handshake failures and repair workarounds.

  • Warranty service may require paying shipping to a service center even during warranty coverage, which can be expensive for a heavy receiver.

  • Shipping may not be free at checkout, since PayPal reportedly added a shipping charge while a credit card removed it.

  • Dirac Live Bass Control reportedly does not include Dirac subwoofer/bass correction and instead relies on AVR bass management for sub calibration.

Thanks for the feedback! I currently have 7 channels, but do have some upfiring Atmos speakers sitting around that I could add by upgrading to this AVR. Do you think adding those upfiring speakers would add anything to the 2 built-in Atmos speakers I already have? You think that $300 bass add-on is worth it if I only have one subwoofer? Thanks again!
Tough questions.
1st, this can only process 9 channels.
Based on what you said let's assume you likely use this in a 5.1.4 enabled setup.
Here is the optimal way to set that up.
https://www.dolby.com/siteassets/..._setup.pdf

You can also do a hybrid or height position.

Since you already have the extra speakers, I would suggest giving it a try and see what you think.

Personally I think Bass Control is the main reason to go with Dirac especially if you use a subwoofer(s).
Many many people believe they don't need it(for many reasons).
I would give it a shot & if you feel the same way I wouldn't worry about it.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Mine is in the shop right now after developing an issue after just a few months. The worst part is that Onkyo requires you to pay to ship their products yourself to a service center even when under warranty, and these things are not small or light, so shipping is quite expensive.
I've always bought Denon in the past. This was my first Onkyo. I'm going back to Denon next time. Not that they're perfect -- the only reason I bought the Onkyo in the first place was the Denon completely dying after about 5 years.

Looks like the data points are trickling in. The RZ30 is not 2 years old yet and supposedly has a more robust HDMI implementation. Let's see how many more reports come in...

You can keep thinking that but the 3800 is a different animal than even anything Onkyo has right now (what PAC AVR has 4 SW outputs and can do Dirac ART currently?). If none of the extra features from the 3800 interests you, just pay for what you need. I honestly haven't come across too many audiophiles on SD and certainly not many who care about ART!
I waffled for about a week between something good enough for 'right now' ($300-700) and something future-proof, with pre-outs, will knock the house down etc ($1500-2500) and chose the former, but in a year or so I will get something like the 3800/4800.
FWIW there was a like-new 3700 on marketplace for $500 a 1.5 hour drive from here, but I missed the guy by an hour.

A 3700 wouldn't be future-proof. Waiting for the price to come down on the 3800/4800 may not be a bad idea as the tariffs and availability of Dirac ART on the platform have already done their damage.

Nobody knows as not even ASR has benchmarked the RZ30 yet. It's a bit of a downgrade going from the 4700 to the RZ30 but you know your financial situation better than me. Best advice is to just buy the RZ30 and audition it in your house and make sure the return policy is favorable if needed!
I will add/point out that all benchmarks tells us is the capability.
That does not actually translate to actual sound performance, even though people often try to correlate them.
If they did we wouldn't need to audition them at home to hear how they sound.

CEC caused a device to turn on by itself and burn-in my old LG B7. Never again...
Uhh that's not how burn in happens unless you maybe didn't turn off the display for like a month & was on a static picture!

Can anyone who has this tell me if you can set the display to always show the sound format and not just input source and volume like all other Onkyos?

Banana plugs should work with 99% of binding posts in today's mass market AVRs.

Did you pay for the $300 bass add-on software? I just have one sub so didn't know if it was needed or worth it.
Just the free included one. I have a 5.1.2 setup

Lol yea if I'm honest if feel like CEC and ARC are theoretical things. HDMI compatibility was a mess and most companies struggled with it and I agree, no idea who is to blame.

I waited a while in those late 2000s early 20-teens for adopting a receiver with HDMI of my own. I had separate amp and preamp (no HDMI) then eventually dropped to a beast of a Harmon Kardon receiver that I loved the audio Q on (again no hdmi) instead opting for an HDMI switch programmed by my harmony remote for just video signal.

I went with a Yamaha RX-A3070 back in 2017 or so finally and it's been perfect in terms of HDMI. I cant think of a single time where I press TV on the harmony and i'm missing audio/video/both. The only thing that surprised me about the yamaha was how underpowered it felt was compared to my previous amps. I'm finally considering upgrading again simply due to wanting higher bandwidth passthrough (4k 144hz or so to match tv or beyond possibly). I'll admit I spend no time thinking about all the latest sound features like whatever Dirac is.
ThisKey features for 99% of the public:- 9 channels- dual independent sub out (rz50 lacks this!)- Dirac room correction built in (sans dlbc which is worth getting more so to multiple subs)This is a killer deal. Put the extra money into better speakers which should me the #1 priority, then room treatments

Yes it will. That is what I'm using for my speaker connectors.
