Seriously, with these things it's not a matter of if you experience the hinge issue, but when. Keep listening to your gut and stay away.
Community Reviews
The WH-1000XM5 stands out for excellent noise cancelling and noticeably better sound than the XM4, with very soft pads and strong comfort for long listening or flights. It also works well for travel and all day wear, and the listed price is described as the lowest seen for a brand new pair. The main concern is the fragile hinge design, with repeated reports of breakage and weak warranty support. Some also find the pads shallow or the cups hot for warm ears, making this a strong sounding set with durability caveats.
The WH-1000XM5 can eliminate plane background noise during long flights.

The WH-1000XM5 can stay comfortable for all-day work and travel use.
The WH-1000XM5 can have soft over-ear pads that reduce ear fatigue.
The WH-1000XM5 hinge can break over time, and Sony may refuse warranty coverage.
The WH-1000XM5 can get uncomfortably hot for warm or sweaty users.
The WH-1000XM5 ear pads can be shallow enough to touch the inner headphones for larger ears.
Some WH-1000XM5 units can fail to pair properly or produce sound, suggesting a dud.

I recommend saving your money and opting for the XM6 instead.

I own the 4s and the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2. Got the 4s for $111 refurbished from Secondipity eBay store, & the B&W new from the Costco deal for $150.
The B&W have far superior build quality, precision, audio separation, and general sound quality. The 4s have marginally better ANC, and feel lighter but also cheaper. But they are better for travel IMO because unlike the 5s, the 4s fold into a smaller form factor.
