The WH-1000XM5 stands out for excellent noise cancelling and noticeably better sound than the XM4, with very soft pads and strong comfort for long listening or flights. It also works well for travel and all day wear, and the listed price is described as the lowest seen for a brand new pair. The main concern is the fragile hinge design, with repeated reports of breakage and weak warranty support. Some also find the pads shallow or the cups hot for warm ears, making this a strong sounding set with durability caveats.

As a long-time XM4 user, I tried the XM5 a few years ago but didn't find it as appealing or good as my older XM4. However, after purchasing the XM6 a few months ago, I have to say that it's finally worth the upgrade.
I recommend saving your money and opting for the XM6 instead.

Great sound, but if are remotely a warm or sweaty person, be prepared to sweat your ears off. I hate these because if this alone. So damn hot

I keep hearing about hinge issues with the XM5 so always stayed away from them.
My son's new pair broke within a month. Sony said tough. I took it apart and used JB Plastic weld and they have not busted again since. But, would recommend avoiding.

Still rocking my XM2s. After the redesign with the thin hinges constantly breaking I didnt see the need in upgrading.

Over-the-ear pads so soft, ear fatigue didn't even exist. Noise canceling: top-notch.

The pads on these are pretty shallow so if you have larger ears they can touch the inner part of the headphones. If they do Google how to mod the ear pads and make the ear cavity deeper

Even my XM3s have this issue albeit the pads were slightly thicker on those. Don't understand how Sony can't angle the dust filters to avoid ear touching like Bose does. Does Bose have some sort of a patent..lol

I have the 4's and 5's. I like the 5's a lot better. No issues for me on mine. I have also seen reports of the 6's having hinge issues.

Did they fix the failure prone hinges of the 5s?

I own the 4s and the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2. Got the 4s for $111 refurbished from Secondipity eBay store, & the B&W new from the Costco deal for $150.

The B&W have far superior build quality, precision, audio separation, and general sound quality. The 4s have marginally better ANC, and feel lighter but also cheaper. But they are better for travel IMO because unlike the 5s, the 4s fold into a smaller form factor.

I run (and sweat a lot) with these no problem. I just wipe down the ear pads after working out. Outdoors I prefer OpenRun headphones (not the pro's, the non-pro are 100% bone conducting, the pro's have a speaker and other people can hear you rocking out).
