These don't have any buttons and require the App to use. It's free, but it's a little annoying to have to pull out my phone every time I use it. That said, I use mine at least 2-3 times per week. Mine has worked flawlessly since I got it about 6 months ago. I've definitely gotten my $20 out of it.

Nothing really to be said that hasnt been said before in the numerous times this gets posted (exclusively by staff). No physical controls, app control is free (for now). No guarantee that will persist.

That's not steaks, that's roast beef, 165F is way too much heat especially for that cook time. Restaurants will usually keep their steaks at 120-130F so they can slap it on a searing grill, pull it just after it gets marks for rare and in under 1 minute for medium rare. The general answer for home users is 3-4 hours @129-135F for a ribeye or strip, once you've reached a four hour cook time at those temps it's starting to really break down connective tissue, keep going and it shreds rather than having a tender but still steak-like chew.

Wut??? 165???? Dude. That isn't mixed results, that is ruined steak 100% of the time.
I think somewhere along the route, he confused the doneness temperature for a TURKEY with that of a steak! Big Grin

His point was that 165 would be better for chicken thigh than steak. I don't have this, but I would guess 120 degrees so you end up with 130-135 medium rare after searing.
Searing after sous vide does not, for me, raise the internal temp enough to change the doneness. For filet mignon, I do 133F for medium rare and it's very pinkish-red inside after searing. 120F would still be undercooked (and possibly dangerous as bacteria isn't killed until 130F).

Well I guess I have gone this long in life without making any Sous Vide or even knowing what it is so I guess I don't need this Stick Out Tongue:

Appreciate the detailed response. Sounds like a much better alternative to reverse searing (low temp in oven with a meat thermometer, and then quick sear both sides.)

The only issue is my wife has been going nuts about health stuff and would not want to boil food in plastic. Already tossed out my awesome Ovo non-stick pans and anything teflon coated. Won't even let me put plastics in dishwasher.
I did a bit of reading about microplastics and sous vide and the temps (assuming you stick to the 130F's) that the release of particles is very low. It's not until around 150F that the problem really arises.

Here is an interesting read on sous vide and microplastics:

Do NOT buy from this brand. You HAVE to download an app to use the freaking thing. Stay away, stay away.
If that's your philosophy on using things, I'd say your life is much harder than it needs to be. I use apps for a hundred things a day and to be honest, it's actually easier.

And it's this MODEL, not the brand. Anova (the brand) has plenty of models with touch controls, but they're not $20.

Been wanting to try this method. Prefer manual controls but I'll give it a try for $20

If it helps, I've had to request PFAS testing on components and the Test Labs ask you ship parts in Ziplock brand bags do to the low to zero amount of PFAS in their product vs other brands.

I use FoodSaver-brand zipper bags as they have a "valve" in the bag and I use a hand pump to vacuum the bag (the same pump I use to remove air from wine bottles with the rubber stoppers). Not getting all the air out of the bag would cause the bag to possibly float and also cause some sides of the steak to not be the correct temp due to the air barrier. Personally, I'm too old to start worrying now about microplastics. Smilie
Google found this:
FoodSaver bags are generally considered free of BPA, BPS, and phthalates, and they are constructed from FDA-compliant polyethylene and nylon, making them safe for food storage and sous vide cooking. While some studies have detected PFAS in various plastic storage bags, independent tests often highlight FoodSaver as a safer alternative

Good cut steak, do NOT cook it for 8 hours or whatever mentioned above. I believe ideal is 1-2 hours. After 2 hours, the fibers in the meat start breaking down. Google it, as there are plenty of suggestions out there.

I usually just do mine for 2 hours if I have the time, and then sear it for a couple minutes on my Weber gas grill. Or you can also sear it on a cast iron.

But I guess if you're doing low quality cuts, might need to cook it longer so it is more tender.

I have the Anova non-mini and I love it. Makes perfect steak every time. Might grab the mini just to have a backup at this price.

I purchased this after having a much more expensive model. This works great. Only suggestions are to start with hot tap water and cover to avoid condensation

I always start with very warm water to expedite getting to my desired temp and I use a plastic container and put foil over the top. Just can't bring myself to spend $40+ on a container w/lid.
