Considering moving on from another brand and trying to figure out if the durability & app interface is worth it... I notice this unfortunately is only for the 1080p version when the 4k gets you a lot more clarity (but cost almost 3x as much).

I like Tapo because it's free if you install a microsd card. I've been using it for about a year and picked up this camera 6 months ago. As you noted it is only 1080p so image quality isn't as good as my C120 is (2k) that I have mounted on my house. I use the C402 down my driveway and it acts as "driveway sensor" when a vehicle or person enters. I like not having any service fee and the cameras are reasonably priced.

We have quite a few Tapo cameras (rural/agricultural setting). They run from the early acquired C402 to the newest C660 (most solar powered, some 2k are 110V). Very happy. Had to install WiFi extenders (Deco Outdoor) to get signal from some farther out 4k cameras, but with the microSD cards installed and access to the feed from anywhere w/out subscription fees, we're happy. Had some interesting captures over time...

Without subscriptions, does it support 24/7 continuous recording and does the APP have Ads?

I have it installed to cover the driveway, I'm ok with the resolution and battery life but it seems to miss events randomly so I'd see the car going out but not coming back. The app does have ads.

Yes to 24/7 continuous. No ads in the android app, but it does have a "deals" tab that I've never once clicked on. I don't use the app much, as you can setup widgets to do whatever you want, and can also use any type of home automation setup with them.

I pretty much only go into the app to download specific things off the camera. They autoloop and record over themselves when the sd card becomes full unless you manually tell it to keep a video clip using the app

Do these have people / pet detection? So you only get notified when there is a person or pet at the door and not just leaves falling etc.

I have 2 of these to monitor a rental property. They have been great so far. I have had them for about 6 months.

Yes, they do. Also its been at this price multiple times, I have the same camera I purchased ~ a year ago.
I also bought the more expensive PTZ one because it has timelapse recording and the zoom and autotracking is pretty good.

Its 2X the price but the auto tracking and zoom I think makes it worthwhile.
I prefer these cams over Eufy because Eufy doesnt have pet detection, so it'll miss animals unless you turn off all filters and than it'll keep triggering on leaves and branches. I think Tapo is the best if you don't want a subscription, and for subscription route Wyze is best.

No, not this one.
The table in the ad mentions its missing this:
24/7 Continuous Capture
But other more expensive models have it.

this one is actually 3MP 2304x1296, but yeah nowhere close to 4K
reliable enough as a solar camera, but detect range (PIR wakeup) is sort of limited, might not reliably cover the entire backyard
FOV 111°(Horizontal), 56°(Vertical) is okay, could be wider, need to be mindful of positioning for the PIR sensor to wake up the camera
battery stays charged 100% in low traffic area, this absolutely will not do 24/7 recording

Tapo support is a pita to deal with, be ready to spend hours of troubleshooting / documentation before they would process a RMA
