EGO's 21 inch self propelled mower is praised as a quiet, lightweight electric option that handles regular mowing well and pairs nicely with the 6Ah battery for smaller yards. It can cover about a third of an acre on a charge, and runtime improves when self propel is turned off. The main cautions are weak performance in thick or wet grass, faster drain on self propel, and EGO battery and charger costs, especially since this bundle includes the standard charger rather than the fast charger. The 3 year warranty and possible electric company rebate help soften the price.

Common Questions (5)

  • It works well when mowed regularly, but thick wet grass can bog it down. It also struggles once grass gets over about 2 inches tall and thick, so it's best for staying on top of mowing rather than letting the lawn get overgrown.

  • Runtime depends heavily on lawn thickness and whether you use self-propel. A 6Ah battery should be fine for a small yard, and pushing the mower yourself instead of using self-propel can noticeably extend runtime.

  • It includes the standard charger, not the fast charger. The fast charger is useful if you plan to rotate 2-3 batteries and want near-continuous mowing, so buying this bundle makes more sense if you already have EGO batteries or don't need rapid recharge.

  • EGO batteries can be left on the charger, but keeping them warm or sitting at very high or very low charge for long periods can shorten battery life. Storing them around 40-60% and avoiding charging while warm is a practical way to help them last longer.

  • It can handle a 1/3-acre, non-flat, complicated yard, and one user only needed the smaller extra battery for about 5-6 minutes. With familiarity, the 5Ah battery alone may be enough for that size yard.

Ryobi is good for drills and smaller tools for people just looking to hang pictures in their home. Their lawn tools don't really come close to ego. And I would get milwaukee or dewalt over Ryobi these days.

Ego is awesome. Yes, the batteries are expensive. But they are quality, and last a long time. I am just replacing my first battery thats having problems after owning it for ~8 years. That's a decent enough service life for me to be happy.

Also, ego just recently released their commercial powerhead multi tool in the usa. The batteries work with it too, as well as the multi head tools. The new multi head is brushless wihlth variable speed and is static output power instead of only peak rated like the current one. Ego continues to push the product line forward with development. And considering the 5 acres and a commercial property Ive used them to maintain with, I am very pleased with their performance YoY.
I believe we're all extrapolating from our own experience, and it's subjective. I am happy that it works for you, and clearly, I am still in the EGO eco system. But my experience has been different. My battery started showing issues withing 3 years and was basically unusable after 4. The mower broke, and it took two months of waiting before they "fixed" it .. it didn't work again, and then they just gave me a refurbished unit. I don't know if many people have two mowers, but 2 months is quite a long time during mowing season. So is it a good mower? Sure, when it works, it's great. But my experience has not been 8 years (more like 3) and that obviously creates a different value proposition.

How does it compare to Greenworks? Costco has a $100 discount for their mower with two batteries now.

I will happily admit the mower is the tool in Egos lineup that I dont particularly like. Mostly due to it having its drivetrain tied to the rear wheels. This means that the rear wheels dig into the ground if you push it down to pop the front wheels up and make quick pivots, a common mowing move.

As for your battery issues - perhaps you let it sit at over 80% or less than 20% charge for extended periods. That will shorten the life of almost all rechargeable batteries significantly. I do wish todays battery chargers had a "storage" switch so that it didnt have to be a manual operation. For the most part I keep mine around 40-60% charge when not in use, and use the quick charger to boost to full when I intend to use it.

My brother has this EGO and it bogs down in thick grass. I have the Greenworks 80v 21-inch 2 battery kit and it chewed through the thick grass like butter, beating the EGO in performance. I mow regularly and get an hour run time using both the 2ah and 4ah that were included in my kit. Give it a try and see for yourself - if you don't like it, Costco will accept the return.

Thanks, I got the Greenworks from Costco as my gas powered one just broke. Glad to hear that yours managed to cut thick grass as it is my main concern about a lawn mower.

I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between this and the 800 series I just bought the other day.
The 800 is a better mower. It has more torques and the Select Cut™ Multi-Blade System for a better cut and more suction.

I have an 800 and it mows my smallish yard easily with a 5 ah battery. It also picks up the leaves on the grass in the fall as well as the Honda it replaced.

I liked the honda, but not having to buy gas is great. The Ego is also lighter and therefore easier to push if you don't want to use the self propel, which I only use going up hill.

On the other hand, some people think it's the fast charger that's killing their batteries, and downgrade to a slow charger. I don't have enough data/evidence to prove either way, but there is definitely a feeling that if you want your batteries to last longer, use the slow charger. If someone knows more about it, with some actual evidence (other than "head bad", "slow good"), would be helpful.
The 3 year warranty IMO makes it worth the risk. If you can kill your battery in the 3 years then you're covered, and if you can't then its made it through the early life mortality phase and is likely to last a long time.

As for capacity degradation, I'd much rather have a fully charged battery with 80% of its rated capacity than a dead battery with 100% of its rated capacity.

But that's just like my opinion man.

In for one, my yard is too much for me to handle with a reel mower and after cutting it manually for almost 3 years I'm biting the bullet. I know my neighbor can't wait for this and honestly my back is going to be a lot happier too.

I have an ego trimmer already so I don't need the other charger, any chance I can return just the charger to make it more slick?

I bought this and returned it last year. Save yourself some money and don't buy any EV Lawn Mower with less then 80v power.
I used a few weeks, any more than 2" tall thick grass, it stuck, not enough power.
I am planning to buy an 80V Greenworks at Costco deal.

can anyone confirm the 50 minute run time? does using the self propel feature use up a lot of battery?

I really think it will depend on the thickness of your lawn. Self propel will drain the battery faster.
I just got this mower last week to replace my Ryobi. This is a significant upgrade over Ryobi. I can tell EGO understands battery technology better. The charger itself has a fan to keep the battery cooler while charging. If you want to extend the life of these batteries don't charge it while it's warm and store inside not in a hot garage. Avoid leaving it on the charger once charged.
