Phone works with active Mint Mobile and Tracfone T-mobile physical SIM out of the box. Rejects AT&T (h2o).

The service is a big deal if you know how to use it
- Many people harvest the plan by merging it onto an existing TF plan
- Rewards points give you extra data/min/text that you can add on after 2 months
- The number can be transferred to other carriers for port-in deals, ex: get a Galaxy A36 free instead of the TCL phone
- New number gives you new customer promos with various retailers/online services. You can change your Tracfone number 4 times a year. Metro allows 1 free change.

There was a Moto G Power 2024 deal for ~40 each with the 1 year service a few months ago. That phone is also 8GB/128GB with a Dimensity 7020.

open the app info menu for all the bloatware on your device and find where it displays which app installed it then note it down

enable usb debugging

get scrcpy (screen copy/mirror app) from github, shizuku apk and canta apk from github as well.

adb install shizuku.apk
adb install canta.apk

run scrcpy on your desktop. open shizuku app, select "install with adb command" option. click copy button to copy the command.

on desktop go to your adb command prompt and paste the code with ctrl+v and hit enter. you now activated shizuku. open shizuku and grant canta permission. open canta and find the bloatware apps + the installers responsible for them and remove/uninstall.
safe to delete canta/shizuku app if you want.

For these online orders from Metro, once they ship the phone is it ready to use or do I need to go to store to activate it?

You can activate at home. Mine came with an esim. Just use the link (ist says HERE) in the email you get from Metro.

Stay away from any TCL products if you don't like forced installed bloats after every restarts, every update. Absolutely terrible user experience.
which is added by the carriers not the phone company, you would know if you bought enough phones.

metro is one of the worst when it comes to preloaded apps on any phone i get form them.
T mobile and ATT isn't much better, they often hide it under app selector or something. my T mobile Galaxy devices often comes with a bunch of bloatware.

if you want the near stock experience, you choice is to buy unlocked phone. that said, my T mobile version of this phone has NO bloatware whatsoever out of the box, which was the first for me.

Which none of the countless iPhones I bought over the decades, through multiple carriers, have. Even the Pixels, Galaxys don't. Like the OEMs have control over it or something.

well.. i cannot say much for apple or pixels (since i don't use them), but I do have a few galaxy (like 8 or more) from T mobile and they are loaded with bloatware. the only galaxy that i have that doesn't have bloatware are directly from samsung unlocked (and even those have more vendor apps).

I have just received the nxtpaper 70 from t mobile this afternoon, and when i say there is no bloatware, i mean there is none, not even T Life or app selector. all apps fits in one page. the only three thing that is not stock android is IR remote app, smart manager app and a note app.

I like it quite a lot actually. Keep in mind mine is a T-Mobile version and comes with no bloatware. Maybe MKDas could provide feedback on the one he or she has since he seems to know so much about it.

Speed wise, expect it is a mid range phone so if you the latest and greatest games, it may not perform to your expectation. But I find the next paper thing is quite intriguing. It has a matt screen and with the epaper mode turned on, look and feel just like my Kindle. The craftsmanship is also pretty good for the price. The only thing I wish they come with is a pen.
I think if you're looking for a IP67 phone that doubles as e-reader with SD card expansion slot.this may just be your best choice. but if your objective is portability and good camera, this may disappoint you. also keep in mind that you can not really find that many choices for case for this phone.

Did anyone try to factory reset without the SIM card in the phone? Perhaps the phone will revert to unbranded as regards bloatware?

Mine came with esim. Pretty sure a factory reset would wipe the esim.

If you port in, phone is free but only with a $55 1st month plan (without auto pay), that's how the total is $55+tax.

If you want a new number, phone is $19.99 but minm plan you need to opt is $65/month, otherwise the price will not be $19.99 for the phone (I assume that's what is happening for you)
I think you can get the same deal with new number now
