The most reliable way to tell if a refurbished iPhone still has original Apple parts is to check its Parts & Service History in Settings. iOS will explicitly tell you whether each major component is Genuine, Unknown, Used, or Unverified.
✅ 1. Check Parts & Service History (iOS 15.2+)

This is the single most accurate, Apple‑verified method.
How to check:

Open Settings → General → About
Look for Parts and Service History

If the phone has ever been repaired, you'll see entries for components such as:

Battery
Display
Rear cameras
Front camera / TrueDepth system
Logic board (on newer models)

What the labels mean:

Genuine — Original Apple part, properly paired and calibrated.
Used — A genuine Apple part, but previously installed in another iPhone.
Unknown — Non‑genuine part, mismatched part, or calibration failed.
Unverified — Logic board replaced; may affect features like Apple Pay.

If the phone has never been repaired, this section will not appear at all.
✅ 2. Check the Model Number Prefix

This tells you how the device was originally sold (not whether parts were swapped later).
Go to Settings → General → About → Model Number.
Prefixes:

M — New retail unit
F — Apple‑refurbished
N — Apple replacement device
P — Personalized/engraved unit

This does not confirm original parts, but it helps you understand the device's origin.
✅ 3. Look for Signs of Third‑Party Refurbishment

If the seller is not Apple or a carrier, check for:

Non‑Apple packaging or missing accessories
Misaligned display, unusual color tint, or overly bright backlight
Battery health extremely low on a "refurbished" device
Face ID or Touch ID not working (common with non‑genuine parts)
Camera warnings or malfunction (Apple pairs cameras to the logic board)

These are indirect clues but often reveal unauthorized repairs.
✅ 4. Test Key Features That Break With Non‑Genuine Parts

Apple locks certain components to the logic board. If they were swapped improperly, you may see issues such as:

Face ID not working (front camera or sensors replaced)
True Tone missing (display not genuine)
Battery health not reporting correctly
Camera app errors (non‑genuine rear camera)

These failures strongly suggest non‑original parts.

If you are on the market looking for a 16 Pro Max, I suggest you to look for a used 15 Pro Max locally, lately they been going very cheap on my area ( Los Angeles, California) for around $400, yes that's very YMMV but worth the shot, look for it on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp

Wife needs a new phone fairly quickly, these aren't screaming deals but priced a little below some allegedly reputable eBay sellers.

Who do I trust more, Woot or one of them? Does "eBay refurbished" carry any weight? It also appears the eBay warranty is Allstate as opposed to the Woot warranty.

Woot is the seller and I believe there is a 30 days return policy and they pay the shipping back if you are not happy. But please double check that.

Many ebay sellers want you to pay return shipping if there's an issue and sometimes you have to show the phone is clearly not working vs you just aren't digging the phone reason.

So know all the ins and outs on buying from one or the other and make a good, informed choice either way. Good luck.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank spiders

I picked up a 16PM last sale, it had been activated about a year before (so no AppleCare) but 100% battery, and I was able to add it to AppleCare One with no issues. In like-new condition.

The biggest issue with certified eBay refurbs is the battery health. They can be listed in excellent condition and quite often meet that criteria but the battery will be in the 80-90 maximum capacity range. That is acceptable in certain scenarios but when you're paying $550 for a refurbished phone listed as excellent, a battery at 84% doesn't really make sense imo. The upside is free returns with basically no questions asked for 30 days, so the risk is mitigated.

Yes. Easy returns is the key. In the past I've always ordered 3-4 at a time and kept the one in best condition and battery health. Never had any issues.

I'm looking all over the Woot listings for guaranteed battery life... Am I missing it somewhere?

Woot grade A is not good, they are usually dents and scratches on body and screen. they are definitely not ref., just used phones. spend little more for direct apple ref. (new battery/screen) and amazon renew premium directly by amazon (guaranty like new w/ over 90% battery and 1 yr warranty).

I was tempted to pull the trigger, but there's lots of reviews claiming things don't work, or the scratches are bad or the screen is cracked.

Any recommendations on which to get to use for international travel that allows for enabling hotspot? All of our phones are on ATT deals so they're locked. For international travel we have to pay $12/day for the first phone and then $6/day for each additional phone.
