The review seemed generally favorable, though I don't think it was a very thorough analysis of the router. This router was released around March 2026 according to that review & Google Gemini (Ai). It'll be a while before more sites can review it. If you don't need a 10GBPS port, this may be an OK choice. This router has only 2.5GB ports (WAN & LAN).
The technical specifications are here: https://www.asus.com/us/networkin.../techspec/ Good that it's tri-band WiFi 7 (2.4ghz/5ghz/6ghz band), has 1GB of RAM and is AiMesh compatible with other ASUS routers. The bad/disappointing news is it only has 2x2 spatial stream support on all 3 bands. It would be better to have 4x4 on 5ghz and 6ghz bands. I don't think 4x4 on 2.4ghz is a big deal as it's such a worthless band (too crowded) and only IoT devices and silly smart plugs/doorbell cameras seem to use 2.4ghz anymore.
Seems like an average router to me. Not a terribly compelling purchase. I'll stick with my WiFi 6 ASUS XT8.

Thanks for the info. Are you using MLO (Multi Link Operation) on your router? I have heard of that causing issues for some people. I'm happy to hear ver 1.0 is working well for you.
The RT-BE86U is a pretty router! I like that it has the 10GB WAN/LAN port too. As long as you don't need WiFi 7's 6ghz band, the RT-BE86U looks like a great choice.
yes. we debated for a while, again too, but finally decided to load Merlin on it. it just seems so much better now, lol.
So I wonder if this is launched to replace the 92U since the 92U had a ton of stability problems that even now seem to be unresolved, looking at amazon and most recent reviews still a lot of issues reported. For a router to have 3.8/5.0 is pretty poor for an Asus product.

Perhaps. If ASUS were to replace the 92U with this, why is the 90U inferior in specs though? 90U has no 10GB port, one less LAN port, slower processor and lower spatial stream support on 2.4ghz band (only 2x2 instead of 3x3 on 92U; probably doesn't make that big a difference on 2.4ghz). It's a pity that the 92U seems to have so many issues. On paper the 92U specs are quite good (would love to have 4x4 spatial streams on 5ghz and/or 6ghz, but can't have it all I guess). The most important feature, stability, seems to be lacking on the 92U. It's difficult to understand why some people find the 92U so problematic, yet others mention how great it is.
While the BE90U is new, so far the reviews on Amazon are solid (3 new reviews posted within the last 5 days, as I write this - and they're all 5 out of 5 stars). Yes, they are Vine reviews (Amazon review program; reviewers are sent free products) but if the 90U were terrible I don't think even a Vine reviewer would lie about it (hopefully they are honest).

Only guess, the existing 92U hardware configuration is what was causing the instability, either components not playing nicely with each other causing thermal or em issues... If the 90U is not a replacement it seems like a poor idea from Asus to have two routers both triband at the exact same price point to compete against their own product.

Could be. Maybe ASUS realized the 10GB port and other "beefier" features on the 92U caused problems, so they scaled back the design, reduced some of the feature set, and hence we got the 90U.

I got one of the Refurbished 92U from WOOT! updated to the latest firmware from ASUS(04/01) and so far so good going on a second week of use...the 92U is supported by Merlin if you want more options available.
I got two 92U from the Woot sale. Updated both, both HW 1, both are bad. I had to separate the bands into 3 different UUIDs, and turn off a bunch of features to make it kind of stable (still not 100%).
I ended up with a BE88U and it's amazing! It's faster on 5G than the 92U was on 6G (standing right next to it). 1 router covers my whole house (which previously took two 92U or 7(!) crappy TPLink hotspots).
If you're considering UniFi, you may know their products have various features. If you upgrade to the Dream Router 7 (DR7), you add support for other capabilities such as Protect, Access, Talk and Connect. DR7 = $279.99, compared to $199 for the UniFi Express 7 (UE7). The DR7 adds more 2.5GB LAN ports too, compared to the UE7. FYI during Black Friday UniFi has their best sales (based on what I've seen historically). Last year the DR7 was $229. So if you're interested in the DR7 and want the best price, it'll likely be on a similar sale this November. If it goes for $229 again then that's only $30 more than the UE7's $199 price. (I don't think the UE7 was on sale last BF.) Historical 2025 BF price notes, for reference: https://www.crosstalksolutions.co...day-deals/If you don't care about those other features, then UE7 looks good for $199. It only has a single LAN port, so you'd need to buy a 2.5GB switch. UniFi sells those too, which you probably already know. Here's one for about $50: https://store.ui.com/us/en/catego...lex-2-5g-5One other note, UniFi devices are well known to not have as much reach/coverage capability as network equipment by other brands such as ASUS, Netgear, etc. The ASUS BE90U has a claimed coverage area of "up to 2,500 square feet." UniFi's DR7 & UE7 claim coverage of 1,750 square feet. And you may not even get that much coverage. If you need more coverage, you'll need to add a wireless access point (such as one of these - https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/all-wifi) so you have WiFi coverage everywhere you need it. UniFi is notorious for being easy to set up, but potentially costly as well, due to the need to expand the network by adding all these other devices. If you are trying to save $$, UniFi can get expensive. But folks who use it really like it, so I believe it's worth the potential cost increase.

I think its more likely that this is just an amazon specific model, similar to how costco or bestbuy gets specific models. The only site listed on where to buy on asus's site is amazon, while other routers have multiple places listed.

No that's not it, poor reviews follow the router on every site. Look at Best Buy, same complaints and issues and a 3.9 out of 5 score which is really poor of a score.Issues reported even on the most recent reviews, you get 2 bad reviews minimum for like every 10 reviews.

You are talking about a different router, if asus were going to replace it with this one, they wouldn't sell it only at amazon.
