Yes it does. Using BNPL lenders like Affirm or PayPal's Pay in 4 can definitely impact your credit, and here are a few things that immediately come to mind:
  1. Average age of accounts: Some BNPL lenders report each purchase as a separate installment loan, and each new loan can lower your average age of accounts. AAoA may not be a huge concern if you already have many older accounts keeping the average stable, but it can definitely hurt someone who is still building credit.
  2. BNPL loans can appear as consumer finance-type accounts. On some FICO models, these types of accounts may be viewed less favorably or associated with financial distress. Newer FICO models are starting to aggregate these small consumer installment accounts into separate categories, but not every bank or lender uses those newer models yet.
Most of the credit impacts from BNPL are probably minor and recover over time. But with so many banks still using older FICO models, I personally would not risk it just to save a few bucks, especially for people with weaker credit.
Imagine you are trying to buy your first house and mortgage rates suddenly drop to 3%. You are ready to apply, but these small BNPL-related dings push you just below the best pricing tier. Now you could end up paying tens of thousands more over the life of the loan. Not saying this is likely to happen, but it is just not worth the risk in my opinion.

It's not reported as a loan on your credit report. It has no impact.
