This type of tool is a game changer if you're hanging full sheets in new construction or remodels. It quickly makes perfect cutouts without needing to carefully measure. But if you're trying to make holes in preexisting walls, you're probably better off with a drywall saw, utility knife, or oscillating tool.

You can get the side cutting bits and depth setter as a universal rotary tool attachment for $20 or less.
HF also has a version of this under their Bauer brand for $28.
But if you want better results than the usual rotozip hack job, switch to an oscillating multi tool.
There's even box cutout attachments that are cleaner and quicker than zipping. The end result is almost good enough to not need mud.
