i didnt read them all,but out of the first few i see no true texans. there are no ya'll,s, over yonders or youonto's. i am a by god texan an we not only deserve our own thread, we deserve our own web-site http://www.state.tx.us/

and you should know how to speak or at least understand texan. her is yor guide: Texas Slang Translation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

George W. Bush will be bringing with him many friends from Texas, and for anyone not born in the Lone Star State, the Texan accent and the cowboy colloquialisms can seem a bit strange. Here is a guide to a few of the more colorful expressions they might encounter:

The engine's runnin' but ain't nobody driving
Not overly-intelligent

As welcome as a skunk at a lawn party
(self-explanatory)

Tighter than bark on a tree
Not very generous

Big hat, no cattle
All talk and no action

We've howdied but we ain't shook yet
We've made a brief acquaintance, but not been formally introduced

He thinks the sun come up just to hear him crow
He has a pretty high opinion of himself

She's got tongue enough for 10 rows of teeth
That woman can talk

It's so dry the trees are bribin' the dogs
We really could use a little rain around here

Just because a chicken has wings doesn't mean it can fly
Appearances can be deceptive.

This ain't my first rodeo
I've been around awhile

He looks like the dog's been keepin' him under the porch
Not the most handsome of men

They ate supper before they said grace
Living in sin

Time to paint your butt white and run with the antelope
Stop arguing and do as you're told

As full of wind as a corn-eating horse
Rather prone to boasting

You can put your boots in the oven, but that don't make em biscuits
You can say whatever you want about something, but that doesn't change what it is

That's a fur piece.
It'll take you awhile to get there

Don't worry 'bout the mule son, just load the wagon
just do your part and I'll do mine

Don't call him a cowboy, till you've seen him ride
Don't judge a book by its cover

She's been rode hard and put away wet
refers to an unnattractive, hard-looking woman

toad choker
a heavy rain

frog strangler
also a heavy rain

finer than frog hair
use anywhere you might use the word "fine"

rarer than hen's teeth
pretty darn rare

tump
to spill, as in "I jes' tumped over mah beer"

coke
Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, Mountain Dew, Big Red, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some Texas Wisdom
Never slap a man who's chewin' tobacco.
Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back in.
If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there.
If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.
Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.
There's two theories to arguin' with a woman. Neither one works.
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.
Don't squat with your spurs on.
It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Never miss a good chance to shut up.
There are 3 kinds of people: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest of them who have to touch the fire to see for themselves if it's really hot.

I'll be visiting Dallas / Plano area in August. Anything going on that I shouldn't miss? laugh out loud I was thinking about going to Austin for the Ice Cream festival on August 15th. yummy
Just prepare yourself for suffocating heat. But the ice cream festival in Austin should be nice to counter that. Cool

Damn rain! I'll try to go to the MSAF tomorrow.
Did you make it to MSAF and how was it?

Crazy weather. We left Seattle with it warm and sunny. Got to Dallas and on Friday morning it was cold, thundering and pouring down rain. The museum was great. Really enjoyed the King Tut exhibit and the rest of the museum. Got fajitas at Uncle Julio's and was a fat, happy girl. laugh out loud

The TSA searched our checked luggage. I guess the jars of salsa, the dried chili pequins, the bags of chili blend and the tins of salmon and sardines looked suspicious on their scanner. That or they were checking for Texas contraband. laugh out loud

Hey, glad you had fun in Dallas. Yeah, that is ironic how it was so nice in Seattle and crummy in Dallas. EEK! Was the King Tut exhibition really worth it? One of my friends saw it and she said it was a waste of $50 b/c there wasn't really anything worthwhile to see. Confused

Yes, I went to the MSAF yesterday. It was packed and we had fun. The weather turned out great once the sun came out in the late afternoon. It took me twice as long to get to downtown due to traffic. The bands were OK, but what do you expect for free? Of course the food and drinks were very expensive, but that's to be expected. The artwork is also very expensive, but cool to see.

LOL that they checked your luggage, but I assume they didn't confiscate anything. Wink

The King Tut exhibit doesn't have any of his death masks or coffins as the Egyptian government no longer allows them to go on tour. They are deemed too fragile to travel. So I think that was a big disappointment for some people. However, they had some amazing pieces from King Tuts tomb and from his ancestors tombs. It includes Tuts crown, his crook and flail, golden statues, a throne etc. There were dozens of exquisite pieces to see and I was quite happy with the exhibit.

If you get the King Tut Golden Gift Pack, it's much cheaper. It comes with two VIP tickets and two audio tours for $49. The VIP tickets allow you front of the line access, plus access to the rest of the museum and they're good for any day and any time, instead of having a set day and time. Or if you go on a Monday at noon or later, the tickets are $15 + $5 for the audio tour.

I see, thanks for the explanation. I'm thinking some people would be disappointed that those King Tut artifacts you mentioned that are no longer on tour. I can see the educational value in it and the fact that they're not shown permanently since the exhibition goes on tour. It reminds me of Body Worlds, which I thoroughly enjoyed. That only stops at cities for several months at a time before moving on.

Wave Back from visiting your lovely state! Didn't venture too far from parents home since it was a short visit. Weather was good, not too hot... Some showers and thunderstorms. Ate positively delicious food at Ruggeri's Ristorante for Italian food, La Hacienda Ranch for Mexican, and J.R.'s for steaks. Licklips Oh, had Sonic's too! woot It's going to suck eating at home today. Sadwalk

Visited Grapevine Mills Mall. It's HUGE and a nice mix of stores. The indoor Woodward Skateboard park there was great too!

Zoe, parents appreciated the info you sent and will check out those places soon. Plan to see more on my next visit. It was 95 degrees in San Diego when I returned! EEK! Would I be able to survive the TX summer heat? How bad is it? Might go back this summer. Thanks

^ Sounds like a great trip. Cool Wow, it gets that hot in San Diego?! EEK!

The Texas heat can get bad. It's consistently 90+ for the entire summer, usually w/ streaks of 100+ thrown in there. EEK!

wave It doesn't normally get that hot near the coast here. The weather had been all over the place lately. Must have been much worse inland. I was actually relieved to see it was 95 though, because I thought it was in the 70's and didn't understand why it felt so hot. laugh out loud

Comfort There's another SDer who lives in West Texas but they don't come to the lounge very often. I can't recall at the moment, who it is.
