The Apple Studio Display is a 27 inch 5K Retina work monitor that shines for Mac and creative use, with bright output, excellent color, strong speakers, and a clean all in one setup with built in webcam, mic, and Thunderbolt power delivery. It is praised for graphic design, videography, film editing, and content creation, where the sharp 5K panel and factory color tuning stand out. The main cautions are its 60Hz limit, no HDR, and a webcam that is widely criticized. Open box Fair units also arrive with missing cables, scratches, or cracks, so condition and remaining warranty deserve close checking.

  • The Studio Display works well as a work monitor with great color and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity.

  • The integrated power adapter and Thunderbolt power simplify a clean single-panel setup for laptop work.

  • The built-in webcam, speaker, and mic support Zoom calls without needing extra peripherals.

  • The display can deliver strong brightness and excellent color reproduction for graphic design and videography.

  • Open-box "Fair" listings can mismatch actual condition, including cracked glass or a cracked corner on arrival.

  • Open-box "Fair" units may be former in-store display hardware with long daily usage hours and limited swap flexibility for VESA needs.

  • The webcam quality is described as utter garbage, which can make the display hard to justify for video calls.

  • Open-box "Fair" units may arrive with larger dents or scratches and may be missing parts, accessories, or packaging.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

If you do content creation, this monitor comes out of the box with perfect color correction. So if you need to get your images and videos to look like they would on an iPhone display, then yeah this is perfect. I've had this for a couple years already.

Just a heads up, but if you want a display very close to this, you can buy a used 2015-2020 5k retina iMac for $200-400 on eBay or fb marketplace, and either use software like TargetBridge or buy a new driver board for $220 and convert it. I went the TargetBridge route. It's more work and I don't regret it. There's minor mouse lag but the display is gorgeous.

For the folks that don't get why it's a big jump going from a 4k to 5k monitor, it's because 2560 is the best resolution for 27" monitors. At 5K, MacOS just doubles the detail, so everything is the perfect size for usability and it's ultra crisp.
Apple has been slowly and steadily improving its 5k panels over the generations. Plus, screens do deteriorate with age.

A few caveats about TargetBridge: it requires an iMac with at least Thunderbolt 3 (so, 2017 or newer), it sends a compressed stream (at least somewhat lossy), and it can't achieve the full 60hz the panel is capable of (it's limited to 48hz). The color fidelity is likely impacted by the compression. Personally, I wouldn't consider it both because of the substandard refresh rate and the lag. I definitely wouldn't buy an old iMac to use with this software, especially since there are now third party 5k screens that will outperform it on every metric for under $600.

Anyway, I was curious about your post because I had a 2015 iMac 5k and wanted to find a way to repurpose it as a display when it started getting too slow for me. The only software option I could find at the time was Luna, which doesn't even support the full 5k resolution (it upscales from 4K). I also looked at buying a driver board but decided the more prudent option was to sell the iMac and buy a third party 5k display. Now, the value of the iMac has probably crashed enough that the board swap makes sense if you already have the iMac.

But I wouldn't recommending buying an iMac just to do the board swap unless the DIY is part of the appeal: it's highly unlikely that these third party driver boards can compete with even lower-end name brand monitors on reliability / ease of use, and there's no support if something goes wrong (either during the transplant or later on).

Hi fellas, I know this forum is old. I ordered today one for pickup in excellent condition, which ironically is now $735. Can anyone share their experiences with not fair, not good, but excellent condition? I know it depends on the store, the employee, etc, but just from others experiences.

Solid advice. We have a 2015 iMac 5k and that driver board to convert the iMac into a display is somewhat expensive and the install doesnt look trivial.

I'm also not blown away by our iMac retina display by modern standards. It's some part age and some part that newer display tech has improved (good IPS is commonplace and OLEDs are around in the same size for reasonable money). Still if one were at my local store, I would strongly consider it.

Our 2015 iMac still works for the moment, plus we have 32gb of ram in the thing (ddr3), so it really hurts to spend big bucks to get the opportunity to throw away a technically working PC.

In my experience over 5-10 data points the condition at Best Buy is meaningless. Case in point, I ordered this deal. The Apple Studio Display I purchased was Excellent condition. It arrived with a crack in the glass and I can't even get it to work with my MacBook yet. It was obviously a display and if I can ever get it to turn on, I fear it has lots and lots of hours of use.

Picked up a fair condition for $530. It was basically a display model. Looked used and the Thunderbolt cable was missing.

Mine arrive damaged and I finally returned it at the end of the return window. I'm missing the Studio though... was a great look display but hard to justify damaged at the $750+ price I paid....
