I went in to check out and maybe buy one of these three or four months ago and finally ascertained that these were former in-store display units. Upon checking the serial number on the one that they had it was determined that it had an in-service date three years prior, so it had been on at least 18hrs/day (probably 24) for well over a thousand days. For me that was a no-go, though I'm sure the panel had a lot of years left in it I just didn't feel like taking the chance.

it's not a gaming monitor, it's a work monitor with great color and TB5.

That's not even remotely in the same class of displays. It's not 4k, let alone 5k.

The Apple Studio Display is a 27 inch 5K Retina work monitor that shines for Mac and creative use, with bright output, excellent color, strong speakers, and a clean all in one setup with built in webcam, mic, and Thunderbolt power delivery. It is praised for graphic design, videography, film editing, and content creation, where the sharp 5K panel and factory color tuning stand out. The main cautions are its 60Hz limit, no HDR, and a webcam that is widely criticized. Open box Fair units also arrive with missing cables, scratches, or cracks, so condition and remaining warranty deserve close checking.

Common Questions (5)

Fair Geek Squad Verified units are supposed to work like new and be restored to factory settings, but they can have larger dents or scratches and may be missing parts, accessories, or packaging. In practice, some Fair units arrived as floor/display models with normal exterior wear or a missing Thunderbolt cable, while others had cracks or other damage and were rejected.

It is a strong Mac and creative-work monitor with excellent color, very bright output, good speakers, webcam, mic, and Thunderbolt power delivery for a clean desk setup. It is less ideal for gaming or movie use because it tops out at 60Hz and does not support HDR.

The risk is mainly condition uncertainty: some units arrive fine, but others have cracked glass, missing cables, or obvious display-model wear even when listed as Excellent or Fair. Checking the serial number, asking Best Buy to explain the listing, and verifying remaining Apple warranty coverage can help before you commit.

Verify the remaining Apple warranty coverage, inspect for cracks or heavy wear, and confirm whether the Thunderbolt cable and other accessories are included. If possible, ask Best Buy why it is graded Fair and whether it was a former in-store display, since some units have seen years of heavy use.

No easy swap is available for these open-box units, so buyers who need VESA should be cautious before purchasing. If VESA mounting is required, it is safer to look for the correct version up front rather than assuming the stand can be converted later.

There is one Fair condition near me, however I really need the VESA mount version and these are not easily swappable. Curious what kind of quality people receive if they go for it.

Fair - Geek Squad Verified
Works like new. Restored to factory settings. May have larger dents or scratches. May be missing parts, accessories, or packaging.

Hmm not sure I want to risk it.

If you have a Mac yes. They're the second best monitor you can have (newest being the first)
