Well unfortinally the one that I got was a display model. The case looks fine but the screen deferentially has burn-in and ghosting. IM going to keep it for over the weekend and give it a good test to get a feel for the processor but its going back.
Has anyone had any luck with trying to get and open box "fair" swapped for something else, perhaps even swapped to a new one?

From Google:

The 2024 Snapdragon X Elite is an older flagship processor , whereas the Snapdragon X2 Plus is a newer, budget-to-midrange chip from 2026 . Despite the X2 Plus being newer, the older X Elite can be better in raw multi-core processing power and high-end graphics, offering up to roughly 75% higher multi-core muscle for heavy workloads. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Performance and Specifications Comparison
  • Core Count & Multi-Core Power: The first-generation X Elite features 12 full-performance cores , which gives it a substantial multi-threaded advantage (roughly 75% more multi-core power) over the lower-tier 10-core configuration of the mainstream X2 Plus .
  • Graphics & Gaming: The X Elite packs a stronger integrated graphics tier (Adreno GPU) built for heavier creative apps and gaming, whereas the entry-level X2 Plus uses a scaled-back GPU configuration (Adreno X2-45) that performs lower in frame rates .
  • Where the 2026 X2 Plus Wins: Because it uses newer chip architecture (Oryon Gen 3 cores) and a tighter 3nm manufacturing process, the newer X2 Plus actually beats or matches the 2024 X Elite in single-core speed and has a massive advantage in power efficiency and local AI (NPU TOPS). [2, 9, 10]

More cores launched as a higher tier chip doesn't translate to a better chip, especially if the 2nd gen X2 chips were drastically upgraded. The 2026 X2 plus kills the 2024 X Elite in single core performance, memory bandwidth, power/battery efficiency, thermal dynamics and even manufacturing tolerances. Two full years is an eternity for this type of tech to mature and improve, especially in the Windows ARM climate.

Gemini:

The 2026 Snapdragon X2 Plus outperforms the 2024 Snapdragon X Elite in single-core responsiveness, thermal efficiency, and AI processing power due to its newer 3nm process node and 3rd-Gen Oryon CPU architecture, though the older 12-core X Elite retains a raw multi-core advantage. [1, 2]
An analysis of top technical sources outlines the performance shift between these generations:

----+Processing Power and Speed

  • Single-Core Speed: The X2 Plus logs a Geekbench 6 single-core score of 3,219, roughly a 15% increase over the 2024 X Elite. This means snappier web browsing and system app launches. [1, 3]
  • Multi-Core Trade-off: The X2 Plus maxes out at 10 cores. It scores around 12,033 in multi-core tests, falling behind the 12-core 2024 X Elite (~14,000) during heavy multi-threaded workloads like video rendering. [1, 4]
  • Memory Bandwidth: Data transit is faster on the X2 Plus, pushing 152 GB/s compared to the 135 GB/s baseline of the 2024 architecture. [5]
  • AI Subsystem: The X2 Plus features an 80 TOPS Hexagon NPU. This nearly doubles the 45 TOPS engine on the 2024 X Elite, vastly accelerating local Copilot+ tasks. [4, 6, 7, 8]
Reliability and Durability

  • Software Ecosystem: Windows on ARM translation layers have matured significantly since 2024, resolving early compatibility bugs with audio interfaces and enterprise software.
  • Unplugged Reliability: Unlike x86 competitors that throttle heavily when away from a wall outlet, the X2 Plus maintains its full clock performance on battery power.
  • Hardware Integration: Laptops utilizing this silicon, such as the HP OmniBook Ultra, match this hardware longevity with robust MIL-STD-810H military-grade drop and spill testing. [2, 9]
Thermal Management and Cooling

  • Architectural Efficiency: Moving down to a 3nm fabrication process lowers the overall thermal envelope.
  • Passive Friendliness: The X2 Plus generates less ambient heat under standard workflows, allowing manufacturers like Microsoft and Lenovo to design ultra-thin devices with very quiet fans or entirely ventless chassis.
  • Sustained TDP: While the 2024 X Elite frequently required aggressive active cooling to maintain high wattages, the 2026 Plus tier chip maintains high performance limits without steep thermal throttling. [2, 9, 10, 11]

I saw that response also. You did ask "how the 2024 X Elite chip is better than the X2 Plus" and my post above answers your question. I guess if someone were to ask the opposite -- how the X2 Plus is better than the older 2024 X Elite, then your Gemini response would be the answer.

As an owner of a X2 Elite Extreme 94-100, you don't have to convince me the X2 series is better than the original. But there are some great deals on the first generation, and including a nice OLED screen, etc., for around $500, if one just has average needs, they're a great deal.

The one & only time I purchased an open box laptop in excellent condition was from Best Buy & it was nothing but headaches. Open box isn't new & more than likely it was purchased. Then returned by buyer after they opened it & after setting it up decided it wasn't for them or there was something wrong with it that they caused or a defect from the manufacturer.

Only one time isn't much to base an opinion on. It can definitely be a crap shoot as anyone can attest, but Best Buy doesn't say anywhere that open box is new. They say it works and looks "like new". Clearly it's been used/opened to some extent. It's always best to do a pickup of an open-box at the store so you can inspect it first. Shipping an open box just comes from another BB store to you and god knows if that store even put the right laptop in the box!

I've saved thousands of $$$ on open box and more often than not, get exactly what I expect and sometimes get surprised with a "pristine" condition when I bought "fair". My latest, a Zenbook A16, was $300 less than new and had I not known it was open box, I would have sworn it was brand new. Whoever bought it before me must have just played with it for a bit and boxed it back up and returned it.

My open box haul is $600 for a 39" LG UW OLED monitor 2 years ago, fair condition...it was pristine with only 8 hours of use. The other is from early this year, $600 for Victus Gaming laptop with a RTX 5060, fair condition but it was basically new. The box said 1GB SSD, but the actual was a 512 SSD. I didn't see any signs of someone opening the laptop so might have been a mistake from the manufacturer.

I hear you and would have loved the 14.5" screen. I was deep-diving both, especially the nuances between the 2024 and 2026 versions. Was particularly interested in the debate between an older but "Elite" chip vs. the newer but more entry-level chip. Reminds me of the Macbook M1 Pro vs M2 comparisons back in the day.

While this is a Lenovo sold by Best Buy, Lenovos have a habit of being deeply discounted more than once either by Lenovo and retailers. Open box or not, someone wants these things gone. If you are interested, have SlickDeals send you a notification for Lenovo. The deal might come back or an even better deal might show up. I got a Lenovo Yoga Chromebook, brand new from Lenovo a few years ago below $200. Retailed about $550. I caught the deal on the 2nd or 3rd time it was put on sale.

Many of the reviews of the X2 laptops make a point of saying how much better app compatibility is. I'm not sure if that is due to improvements in the X2 chips or Windows or the apps themselves have just gotten better. If I understand correctly, the latest Windows, 26H1, only works on the X2 ARM laptops, not the first generation ARM, so that might be something to consider.

What does Windows on ARM mean? Do you not recommend this for gaming?
Windows PC in the old days was run on x86 chips made by Intel and AMD it was fine for desktop, but "ARM" chips are designed differently. It's more power efficient...Apple's M series chips are power efficient as example So Microsoft now has arm based processors and it's way more power efficient which is good for laptop. This laptop will last forever It can do anything really good. Only thing it can't do is gaming because the support for gaming is not there...

I purchased a 512GB MacBook Neo earlier this year but prefer windows. The lack of a backlit keyboard also annoys me more than I thought it would. Any opinions on trading the Neo for this?
If you prefer windows.. and do not game... this pc will be amazing It has 3K screen and 512gb and 16gb on an arm chip.... people are still not adjusting to arm based snapdragon chip.... but it's fast, has good npu ... light and any copilot pc is higher spec pc When Apple made M1 chip, it was sold some what cheap until people caught on..I feel like snapdragon pc for $600 is too good.
