A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Perks of Being a Wallflower - Not bad. A bit cliche for me. Too many Some Kind of Wonderful Pretty in Pink films out there. At least Saved! had a more original take, not on high school in the 80's, but on high school when you're Juno and a wallflower.

Lincoln - Didn't enjoy it at all. Good history, great acting, but not entertaining to watch.

Red Dawn - Never saw the original, but I liked this remake.

Two words...Disney crap. Saw both and the first was during the cold war when we were on that literal brink of a nuclear war with tensions with Russia and Cuba still high but both parties trying not to piss each other off and be the blame for the next world war, a nuclear one at that. The first was far more gritty, more intense, and far more rugged. Though highly unbelievable for even then, it was still more believable than the remake where North Korea replaces the Soviet Union with Russia playing support to North Korean. Rolleyes As you saw in the remake, a lot of touchy feely moments, hero speeches, and the ending was an abysmal touchy feely disappointment.

GI Joe - Highly entertaining action mixed with some goofy plot points just like the cartoon.

This is 40 - Far too long but there were some funny parts.

Life of Pi - The story was interesting before he got on the life boat. After that the movie seriously dragged.

The Call - Good, suspenseful movie. Great performance by Halle Berry.

Rope - Hitchcock. Boring.

The Big Bad Swim - A swim teacher and his adult students battle depression, phobias, divorce, dating, and job changes. Fairly funny.

Escape Fire - Documentary on healthcare crisis. Interesting but scattered, and once again, instead of focusing on the real problems you get little saccharine profile stories that wrap up nicely to make you feel like the film has accomplished something. It is interesting in what it does examine so you should watch it.

Hit and Run - Yawn

Killing Them Softly - Two fins way up for the first 30 minutes of Brad Pitt's production. Funny, classy, clever. Minor production issues with sound and a scene where a car being driven looked fake. The rest of the film dragged on, the political C-Span commentary got old fast, and the exaggerated gore was too much for me. The editing was great. You should see it.

"The Hobbit" - It was OK but not quite as good as I had hoped/expected. 2.5/5

"Harvie Krumpet" - Claymation - very similar to "Mary and Max" 2.5/5

"Judgment at Nuremburg" - Very good - top notch acting by some old school names. 3.5/5

"Paradise Lost" - I watched all three parts of this HBO doc (about some gruesome murders of innocent kids.) Hard to watch at times (I had to turn away quite a bit) but it was a really interesting story.

"Eyes Without a Face" - Awful "classic" horror film. 1/5

Conan the Barbarian (2011) - Wow. Just awful. But what's amazing is that in an otherwise dreadful movie, the scenes with Rose McGowan in them are far and away worse because of her "acting." I went in with less than low expectations and got less than I expected.

The Good Doctor - He didn't kill enough people; not very realistic.

The Awakening - Set just after WWI, it centers around a woman who debunks seances, and supposed ghost hauntings. When she's invited to investigate a haunting at a boys boarding school, her reasons for exposing charlatans and her convictions come under scrutiny by others and herself. A decent storyline with a few flaws but worth watching. 3/5

The Best of See it Now - Edward R. Murrow. If that was the best it wasn't very good.

Iron Man 3 - 7/10

Nothing special. Not as funny as the other 2 or maybe just got used to the humor, not sure. Story was meh, villain was meh, ending was meh. I think Avengers made my expectations too high.

Blitz - Not your typical Jason Statham movie, it was a bit odd. Add into that the major plot holes and I found it annoying. If you do watch it, can you guess where you've seen the bad guy before? No cheating looking it up, it will spoil the surprise of you getting it finally. 1.5/5

Safe - Another Jason Statham movie (DH is doing a theme this weekend on the movie selections) but this one was much more enjoyable. Very fast paced, lots of shooting and a good storyline. I particularly enjoyed the unusual camera angles on some of the scenes. It's violent, which is not usually my sort of thing but the storyline made it watchable. The kid in it is a very good actor. 3.5/5

Hesher - Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Different. Crazy Hilarious. Sad. Heavy metal music, pr0n, pyrotechnics, are a few of Hesher's favorite things. He begins squatting in the garage of a grieving family who are too distraught to evict him. We need more films like this.

Kill the Irishman - True story of teamsters leader Danny Greene, a man the mob had trouble killing. Talk about the luck of the Irish. The documentary included in the extras was far more interesting.
