Community Reviews
The TX RZ30 is a 9 channel Onkyo receiver that stands out for HDMI 2.1, Dirac, and room to grow into a larger home theater. It gets praise for handling Apple TV, Plex, PS5 VRR, and 4K playback well, with flexible audio delay controls and strong value versus pricier Denon models. The main cautions are a reported audio sync problem in source to receiver to TV setups unless eARC is used, plus isolated reliability complaints like a dead front display and a loud power mode click. A capable midrange AVR if you want modern features without moving up to the higher tier.
Common Questions (5)
It can have audio sync problems in a source -> receiver -> TV chain, with one reported workaround being eARC, which defeats the point of multiple inputs. Another setup with Apple TV and Plex reportedly worked flawlessly, and the receiver's audio delay can be adjusted down to the millisecond for manual correction.
Yes, it's a 9.2-channel AVR with Dirac and HDMI 2.1 support, and buyers cite it as a strong value for PS5 VRR passthrough and future expansion. It's especially appealing if you want 9 channels without moving up to a much pricier model.
Some units have reportedly developed failures such as a dead front display after about 6 months, while other owners report 5 to 10 months of use with zero issues. It's a mixed reliability picture, so long-term durability may vary by unit.
No, ART is not coming to the current-generation Onkyo RZ30, RZ50, or RZ70. If ART is the goal, a higher-end Denon/Marantz unit with the needed processing headroom is the path people point to instead.
It is intended to handle HDMI 2.1 and VRR, but one owner reported that 120Hz VRR did not seem to pass and wasn't sure whether it was a setting or a hardware limit. Another buyer specifically chose it for PS5 VRR passthrough, so the feature is a key selling point but may need troubleshooting.

You could probably convince them to pay for the shipping there since its a warranty repair
Denon/Marantz has certainly paid for my unit to be shipped to them for repair..prior to them outright replacing the entire unit under warranty
Bigger problem is picking a week or two to be without my AVR.
I've never had any of the issues described in this thread. I cross-shopped the Denon X3800H and am so happy I went with this for $1000+ less $$.
Amir's reviews are interesting for a test lab; for real world use I think it's completely useless.
That suggests that Dirac ART is guaranteed to make product head and shoulders above the other
And I really cant imagine that if one saves $1000, that its worth it
I am making the assumption that you start with an $800 AVR basis to run your system in the first place
You also failed to mention that the RZ50( and perhaps Rz30) actually outperformed the Denon X3800 in some categories of Amir's testing
Not feelings.
You can see if the unit can provide the wattage promised.
You can see if the unit's distortion and dither are within the manufacture's specs.
It's just like when people say that Williston Audio Labs is too picky. Don't say that your amp can provide 4000w at .1% THD (unless it really can). Otherwise you get called out.
We have seen poor SINAD numbers, Poor wattage performance and yet people are buying those units all day long
That is reality
Really...other than the RZ70...which I assume would pass due to the Audioholics testing results where Gene showed details on SINAD and amp bench performance
I cant recall seeing an AVR on slick deals that would pass Amir's testing
The 3800 offers a few more notable features, even the RZ70 doesn't offer!
If you don't need them, the RZ30 is a really good unit even at this price.
Having compared it to the RZ70, I would include it also especially considering the over double the cost.
As far as Amir's "testing", they are ONE factor of MANY & they aren't really an audible benefit with surround in "real world" use!
LOL..I didnt say anything about feelings

People will buy total crap, because they are familiar with the name.
Millions of people bought Craftsman tools for that 15 year stretch of China garbage (before B&D bought them in 2020).

In reality if you are going to use Amir's testing as litmus test
Then you are probably not in the market for an AVR that can be bought for $1200 or less
Denon X3800 failed, Onkyo RZ30 and RZ50 failed
I think we can assume with certainty the models that are lower in the product lines from these same brands would fail
As I said before..based on the Audioholics testing of the RZ70
I am betting it would pass based on the SINAD and Amp/power supply performance
It has been as low as $1600, if I recall correctly
So perhaps the least expensive AVR on the market that would pass Amir's testing

The other big measurements-based reviewer, Erin Harding, at least makes token attempts to include budget gear in his reviews, and gives them a fair shake. The few times that Amir reviews budget gear, he goes out of his way to deride them in obvious hatchet jobs (e.g. his review of the NHT SuperZero where he deliberately ABs it against Pioneer AJ bookshelves in full-range without a sub, knowing full well that the SZ is designed to be used with a sub.)
An RZ30 regularly being available for $799 is not a great deal but a 3800 for less than $1000 would be (possibly front page)!
Exactly. Amir is a stereotypical audio elitist and that audio elitism is also highly supportive of his livelihood (runs a high end audio company) where you WANT consumers to buy into the "You get what you pay for" sales pitch (which is BS beyond a very low baseline price level, beyond which diminishing returns quickly set in).

There is always those A/V reviewers that only consider performance
So ,they have no value metric , in their tests, to discuss what the dollar value of better really means to a buyer
The reviews are just chasing higher performance specs with no regard to dollar value
Amir is clearly one of them
Another one that the TV people like to look at is HGTV test or the Value Electronics shootout
Before this year with the Samsung S95H win, Sony flagships had won for several years running, even in the HGTV test double blind
But the rub here , in my opinion ,was they never discussed if the Sony...at sometimes a 25-30% price premium , was worth it from the Samsung or LG competition
Some people say its worth the money, others will say no way the Sony flagship is worth the premium they charge and others say they really cant see much difference
As I stated before
In the realm of slick deals..using Amirs testing as a litmus test will obtain you nothing
" maybe " the Onkyo RZ70 would pass , based on the Audioholics numbers
Other than that ( and its sister unit Pioneer LX805) I dont recall seeing any AVR on slick deals that would pass Amirs testing
