Is Five Guys really that good?

10,159 June 10, 2010 at 05:17 PM in Grocery
A Five Guys burger joint just opened today in my area....the first in CA, I believe. I'm dying to go check it out. Maybe this weekend. Is all the hype justified?drool

The spicy fries were somewhat gross...just season salt on fries. Not sure where "cajun" comes from. Burger was good, but terribly overpriced.

For those in the North Dallas area, Scotty P's has MUCH better burgers and fries...plus their shakes are awesome.

To be honest I didn't like their fries. The cheeseburger was really good though.
The burger was definitely one of the better fast food ones I have had. And for the price, cant be beat.

Yea I'm not sure why everyone says they are so overpriced.
Atleast here in Nashville they are relatively inexpensive.

Iagree on their fries.

Gonna be headed up to the Plano area this evening, but I am gonna try Five Guys again. They have a location off of 75 and Spring Creek that opened up a month ago. Whee

I can't wait for In-N-Out burger to open up at Firewheel Center in Garland.

"Little" bacon, double cheese
Small cajun fries (more than I could eat)
Small diet coke (unlimited refills)

$10.05

That's more expensive than places such as Fuddruckers or Red Robin

I went to Red Robin a week or so ago and if I recall correctly the burger I got was something like $8.99 and it came with fries. Add a drink and it was pretty much the same price as Five Guys.

I preferred the taste of the Five Guys burger but I would also go back to Red Robin as well. I would give a slight edge to the Five Guys fries as well but both were pretty good.

Just have to watch out for people with nut allergies since they use peanut oil. Peanut oil gives the fries the amazing flavor.
actually, most refined peanut oil doesn't contain the protein that nut allergy people react to. some docs recommend against it to be safe, but many say they can eat fried peanut oil food without problems. organic/virgin oils have it.

ymmv, of course, but general accepted position

I'm not a fan of Five Guys, they're good but I've had better. I think alot of the "homemade" speal is just a weak excuse for poor presentation. Not to say I don't mind some mess but I don't want my food falling apart on me. My favorite "fast food" burger place is Whataburger because they do everything fast, well made, they're courteous, and best of all they're open 24 hrs so you can get a burger whenever you want a burger. I also like Steak-n-Shake because they make awesome shakes and great cheezefries, but their burgers are undersized and they still fall apart.

Best burger you can get is usually local. You have to put some work into finding a real good place and wade thru the bs places that think they're special. If you're lucky you'll find one; some of the best I've found in Raleigh and San Deigo.

Maybe something has changed in the last 10-20 years or so but one of the 4th graders in the district I drove for died on a field trip within a couple of minutes after eating a french fry coke in peanut oil at a wave pool.

Obviously, the prices at Red Robin are much cheaper Wink
