Photography thread - for Schoob

Schoob asked for people to post their photography in a thread.

I'm not a pro, but I take some good photos and I have a sincere passion for photography. Soon, I hope to learn more and take some great photos.

Since Schoob wants to see a thread about photography, here are some good ones that I took of Luray Caverns last weekend.

As you can imagine, it's tough to get good photos in a cave, but this is my favorite view of Dream Lake inside the caverns:

Here's the formation that I think looks like a little resting sherpa carrying his pack. Or, if you look at the back of the formation, it kind of looks like Vlad Dracul.

This is my favorite picture that I took of the Wishing Well:

Here's one of the ceiling of one of the caves:

And one of some contrasting stone:

OK experts, answer me this. What's the best method of photographing a bright moon (full or near full) surrounded by clouds? If the exposure is two long, the moon and surrounding clouds get blown out, too short and it makes it look like a cloudless sky.
Quote from Kabn :
take two pictures: one where the clouds are showing nicely, then one where you get the moon like you want it. take them with a tripod and don't move the camera between shots, making sure there are no clouds overlapping the moon.

using photoshop/gimp, put the one with the nice moon on the base layer. create a new layer and put the nice clouds pic on top of the other layer. use the eraser tool to erase the top layer where the moon is and maybe around it if the glare shows obviously. might have to work in some custom gradients to make it look somewhat natural. in the end, you get the top layer of the clouds with the nice-looking moon from the bottom layer.

note: i have never done this myself (my wife does the image processing), but i believe this is how she does it.
Iagree or go our earlier in the evening while the sky is still blue (not at like midnight where it's pretty much dark). Then you should be able to see the clouds and the moon without blowing anything out.

Other than that I have no ideas....

I was playing around with high speed photorgaphy while I had some "time off" from the lounge laugh out loud This is the best I was able to do.

I think I need to get some more "time off" from the lounge and add a delay chip to trigger it a little bit later as the egg is more broken.

Try 2 at high speed photography (build a delay timer now that EE background came in handy)

I can make that happen but I would rather have you here Stick Out Tongue

I love the pics! Very...very Cool Thumbsup

You'll just have to take time away from something else besides the lounge...like work or something. laugh out loud

laugh out loud Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass. Now if you could make me immune to warnings... Flex Wink

laugh out loud I can't take my camera to work and start futzing around, they may realize that I'm not keeping busy enough. Stick Out Tongue

I'll probably have a try 3 later. I want to cover the foil with black paper so it's not as reflective... (I still need the foil to "close" the electrical connection)

Thanks I found a new spot. I think next weekend I'm going there with a lighting setup and take some sunset portraits. (I took some this weekend, but with just the flash, it's not the same laugh out loud)

Thanks.

First pic was f/13, ISO-100, 30second exposure time. I used a 6-stop ND filter and a CPL (though in hindsight the CPL was completely useless laugh out loud). PP was done 90% be just tweaking the raw file settings. (white balance, tweak to the levels, a contrast bump in the curves, increase in saturation/vibrance, and a bit of sharpening after resizing). i.e. I could have shot JPG and not done any PP and the pic would look almost the same.

Second picture was a blend of 2 images (blended in photoshop), both were at f/13, ISO-100. One was 30 seconds, and one was 90 seconds (where the log and the foreground are "brighter"). Both shots had the 6-stop ND on it, and I think here I realized that I didn't really need the CPL laugh out loud. Exact same PP workflow (this time maybe 50% was just done editing the raw file, the rest needed adjustment in photoshop including straightening the horizon laugh out loud), slightly different settings (I think I used a little more saturation in this shot)

No flash on either shot. Obviously tripod and remote release (I think Nikon is also limited to 30 seconds if you don't use bulb mode? And with bulb a remote release prevents camera vibrations)

I tried to do the first one as an HDR (I had the 3 bracketed shots), but it looked like crap, so I obviously didn't post it Dontknow

ETA: The 2nd picture was also later in the evening (between the two pics, I took a bunch of pictures with flash of my wife, which I'm obviously not posting on SDs laugh out loud). Maybe 30-40mins difference between the two, the first one was right after sunset.

Was this more info than you wanted to know? Wink

Thanks! I was wondering why the foreground is lit in the second pic....(thought it might be a flash)

Thumbsup Max!

I've got to drag the kiddos out for a session soon, whenever the weather decides to cooperate.
