Pizza delivery guy didn't accept my tip. Was he trying to send a message?

I was visiting San Francisco recently and ordered a pizza and salad from a local restaurant. The delivery guy was in his mid 40's. I only tried to tip him a dollar, but he just said no thanks. I said are you sure, and he declined the tip again. He was friendly and respectful about it. After he left, I started to think that I offered too small of a tip. The bill was around $20, and I just gave my normal Domino's tip. I was thinking maybe he was offended by such a small tip. I should have tipped him around $3. I've never had someone not take money from me. Is a dollar tip offensive to a delivery guy?

It might be. I usually tip $3.

One time I got a pizza and it took like 90 minutes to be delivered. I gave the guy 25 cents more than the bill was in cash and the guy threw a quarter back at me. I didn't ask for it back. I guess he wanted a full tip.

Maybe he just wasn't into your tip. It is San Fran, I'm sure he has a lot of other options.

I heard that in San Francisco you are supposed to tell the driver to turn around and grab his ankles so you can give him your tip properly.

I guess I never understood the tipping for pizza delivery guys. I know servers get paid less than minimum wage and work off of tips. Pizza delivery guys are compensated for the mileage and get paid at least minimum wage. I used to deliver furniture when I was younger and never received tips. It is a lot harder to deliver a sofa sleeper than 3 or 4 lbs of food. He could have been the owner. It was just odd that someone would turn down money even if it was only a dollar. I guess I need to think about the tip before they knock on the door.

I think $1, is kind of insulting for a $20 order. Depending on the business the guy may or may not get much money for mileage and/or gas. Also in some places its legal to pay under min wage for a delivery driver, so he may be depending on tips for his wage. I think 2-3 bucks is standard for a delivery order, with more for an exceptionally fast delivery time. That being said, I don't know his motive--probably was just having a bad day.
