Pizza delivery guy didn't accept my tip. Was he trying to send a message?

278 20 December 29, 2010 at 07:52 PM in Chat
I was visiting San Francisco recently and ordered a pizza and salad from a local restaurant. The delivery guy was in his mid 40's. I only tried to tip him a dollar, but he just said no thanks. I said are you sure, and he declined the tip again. He was friendly and respectful about it. After he left, I started to think that I offered too small of a tip. The bill was around $20, and I just gave my normal Domino's tip. I was thinking maybe he was offended by such a small tip. I should have tipped him around $3. I've never had someone not take money from me. Is a dollar tip offensive to a delivery guy?

Cheapass. I'm a college student and know you always tip around 15%. 10% is already $2 so $3 would have been perfect.

I wouldn't refuse it but hey...maybe he just didn't want to bother with such a small tip.

some places dont allow tips so check if that place is one of them....

i have a couple of grocery stores in my city who send off their staff with my shopping cart to drop the bags into the car.... I tried to tip when i was new to the city in both of those stores but they said its against their policy to accept tips....yeah i know it was not a restaurant as u mentioned but i thought i'd tell u that there r such places like that...

I usually give 'em two - when there's already a damned $2.50 "delivery" fee I don't feel like doling out another $5. Annoyed

I guess I never understood the tipping for pizza delivery guys. I know servers get paid less than minimum wage and work off of tips. Pizza delivery guys are compensated for the mileage and get paid at least minimum wage. I used to deliver furniture when I was younger and never received tips. It is a lot harder to deliver a sofa sleeper than 3 or 4 lbs of food. He could have been the owner. It was just odd that someone would turn down money even if it was only a dollar. I guess I need to think about the tip before they knock on the door.
Pizza guys get a very minimal amount of compensation towards millage. Doesn't nearly pay for gas much less the wear and tear on the car. And they do only make minimum wage. As for that Delivery charge that most places are charging now, they only get a small portion of that as well. The store pockets the rest.

I know how you feel. But for example, out of the $2.00 charge that Papa Johns charges, the driver only gets 75 cents. Store pockets the rest. It's a scam! I usually just do carry out cause I don't like paying the charge of having to tip either. But when I do get delivery I tend to tip around $3. More or less depending on how long I had to wait.

Yeah, definitely. DH will usually go pick it up anyway - the only time he won't is when it snows, and then I feel bad making the guy drive in the snow, so I'll give him $3 then.
