I don't want to bore you all with a long sob story but money is really tight this year. What is the outlook for black friday for toys for Christmas this year?
well, I think alot of it depends on the age of the child. IMO, if you have little ones.. like under 8 or 10, there is almost always good deals to be found. I am not a WM shopper normally, but I do like their black friday toy deals most years. Problem is, as the kids got older, I couldn't get away with the 5.00 baby dolls or barbies... I still hit WM every year for something. Last year, I got my older kids a camera and video camera from there, as well as a GPS for the inlaws.

...Can you explain the staples thingy to me. ...
this is a crazy week bunnies cos of shaws (grocery store chain in our region for all of you in other parts of the country). but weekend or early next week i promise to do a staples primer for you guys. promise.

in the meanwhile, in anticipation of this great note, Stick Out Tongue for everyone interested in staples,

1) on SD, could you please go to the tools menu (on blue bar on top of page), select deal alerts. and set up a staples deal alert, for the hot deals thread. select PM as notification method and daily notification as frequency, please. once a day you will get a round up of all the new staples threads being created. there is no running staples thread. new ones are created in HD every week for different promos/items, so this is one way to keep an eye out on things you might need/want.

2) if you are in town/around a staples in the next few days, could you please pop in and sign up for a staples rewards card, if you don't have one already.

thanks!

...Well, I have the attention span of a gnat ...
lazy, with the attention span of a gnat. got it.
well i think once you realize the MM potentials of SB/Zb that will change. that primer first. staples second. after this crazy shopping week is over.

I don't like carving pumpkins either ...
on meritline or one of those cheapo items sites, the other day i saw a battery operated pumpkin carving set. power tools for the pumpkin essentially. bet it makes it all a lot easier. was just a couple of bucks and free shipping. hunt on ebay you're sure to find a deal on it.

...I'm leaning towards retail, because at least I'll get a discount, which will help with Christmas shopping. Any thoughts?
my dear friend's MIL worked at macy's for several christmases. she liked it. the discount was a big help with xmas purchases just because they carry such a wide range of things. but it also helped them get things for themselves that they needed. plus because she had some work experience under her belt she was promoted to manager. made a big difference in pay etc. so it is worth looking into.
also, what about real estate? would you consider doing that? getting your certificate (you can do that part from home) and become a realtor with some agency? the plus is you get to set your own hours and have a flex schedule. and also, can get a big commission for one deal which would make up for working many 20 hr weeks. on the negative side, you could go weeks without income, especially if you're shy etc. but i know a few people that took it on and are doing pretty well at it.

another option - hostess at a restaurant seating people/manage reservations/capacity. they're required to be pleasant and not buckle under pressure, but no dealing with dirty dishes etc like waitstaff and no heavy lifting. plus you'd work evenings likely, so that would allow for daytime at home and flexibility to share childcare responsibilites with DH.

option 3 - if you have a trader joes near you. they pay higher than other grocery chains and offer full benefits. they've consistently been rated as a great place to work. starbucks is the same way - health and education benefits even for part time workers. both good options. TJ's is nice cos of course you can use the discount to get good food even cheaper for the family.

Quote from gt6mk31 :
[...Did you guys see this over in deals? Wow. I prefer to think it was some kind of inventory thing going on rather a couponer doing crap like that. I can live in my own little world if I want to!Big Grin
didn't see it over in deals, but it occurred to me when I ssaw it in your post that the person could be someone who had a sudden financial crisis (job loss, death in family etc) and realized they need to return everything they bought because they can no longer afford it.

yeah, they almost always have a bunch of door buster sales for the younger ones for the 5.00 range. I usually pick up a few extra for toys for tots gifts, etc. You can usually get pretty good deals on board games too. And I have always had pretty good luck getting WM to price match things from TRU, target, and other ads.

Love your secret..Didn't know that...

Flug, here is the one I've been using. I really like the pdf version of the Qs - much easier. I don't see the 10/30 ones up yet, but I'd imagine within a day or two. BTW, this seller also has Lowes 10% Qs (which are nice for both lowes and home depot).

Linkie [e-junkie.com]
Do the sellers on e-junkie also have the $10/20 cpns...

Jpow and getgreen, thanks for offering the candy cpns..But I am set...

I looked at those darn squinky things cause my DD mentioned them.. They are pricey for such a stupid little toyLMAO reminds me of something that comes out of the gumball machine. They are around 10-11.00 a pack that I saw. Of course, that is still much cheaper than "toys" for the big kidsCool I opted not to get them for my DD cause she is still so young and would just lose them. She only wants them cause she saw the commercial, and heck, she wants everything she sees on there. But, I have so many toys in my attic from target toy clearances.. I mean tons.. My DH told me he needs to get everything down cause he is sure I have forgotten everything up there. I think we have one of almost every leap frog thing made due to clearance and LF coupons. We have 2 tag juniors, 2 tag readers, 2 didj systems, and leapster, and some other learning type system. Plus it seems like I remember getting some kind of computer thing with the last 75% clearance. I stocked up cause my nephew is almost the same age as my DD.
My DH said we need to get everything down and video it so that we can make out own commercials and play for them. Then she will want everything she is getting for ChristmasLMAO

GG - thank you for the super easy explanation of how to do a deal alert. I can't believe I hadn't figured it out sooner. Smilie Thanks!!! I'm still slowly slogging through the info on SB/ZB. I haven't gone back to the ZB site yet. I just need about 50 uninterrupted hours in a day to get anything done! Maybe I should put my "on the internet every spare second I have" teenager on the sites and have her go to town. *laugh*

I kicked the older kids out of the house to play for a bit. We've had some storms last night and I've had headaches and ear aches all day. Frown On top of that, poor Mavis is just cranky cranky.

I have been doing laundry for what feels like a week straight. It's driving me nuts. I have friends who have a laundry day, but I can't seem to get enough done in just one day! I'm sure I'm just over-exaggerating - surely there's some no laundry days in there somewhere...

Does anyone happen to know of or use a free printable planner? I need something that has lots of hours - like from 6am until 9 or 10 pm. I really need to get myself back on a schedule. Everything I find in the store - aside from being ridiculously expensive - doesn't have as many hours. Maybe I'll have to make one. Frown One more "to do" list item.

Okay - apparently I'm feeling whiny today. Sorry.

Cheap Christmas for a 7 year old girl -

Does she like dress up? Go to a Goodwill (whatever) on bag sale, quarter day whatever you area has and do a dress up box. The flashier and gaudier the better. Buy a cheap suitcase to store it in. Decorate a cardboard box to store it. Don't forget the jewelry.

Claire's 5 for $5 or 10 for $10 or whatever they are having these days. Think matching stuff and do little sets.

Are you ok with her playing with make up? Dollar Tree beauty set -- or whatever you can get free with coupons. Raid you stash, you probably have some new stuff.

Home made gift certificates for free/cheap stuff she can redeem with you later.

Does she play with dolls? hit yard sales and used places for cheap newborn baby cloths for her babies.

Get her a kitty. All little girls like kitties and they are abundantly free... to get anyway.laugh out loud

edited to add: maybe you could find a cheap/free old used vanity and paint it up cute and fill it with make up, jewelry, etc. Wrap them all separately and put in the drawers and set on it.
