How many of you still play games using computer

1,058 391 January 27, 2011 at 11:34 AM in Chat (2)
I was just wondering that this might be an interesting topic to talk about.

I used to play games using my PC 3 years ago, The trouble I found was the constant requirement for upgrades. New games keep demanding more computing and graphics power to play. Finally I gave up on the PC and bought the PS3 instead. Now I feel much happy as I don't have to go through hardware requirements once again.

I still see some sder's interested in powerful graphics card even today.

So the question is...how many of you guys still use the computer to play video games, If yes, then how do you guys keep up with the constant upgrades demanded by the new games these days? If you keep on upgrading, don't you think thats not economical?

Do you guys think switching to XBOX or PS3 makes sense?

Note: Consider only games that require high end graphics like MOH, COD, etc.....

Advantages on using PS3/XBOX 360

1...No need for any hardware upgrade.
2...Games can be easily resold on ebay. No DRM problems.
3...Can use this sitting on a couch and play using a big screen TV. More comfort.
4...Get more controllers, then the whole family can have a very good time with games. More suitable for time pass during special occasions like friends get togethers.

I get it man. There are two sides to the story. Just expressing my personal opinion.

When I get home after a long day of work, the less options (or things to think/worry about) the better. Wink
That's the whole idea behind the choices I mentioned earlier.

I work on a computer all day. I just don't find PC gaming appealing anymore. It feels a bit like work.

Now, the PS3 on my big-screen TV with the couch right in front is a different story...
Seemed to suggest you thought using a computer negated the ability to do so from the comfort of your couch/in front of your larger display. Which isn't the case at all.

There is one thing I would like to ask all the PC platform lovers.....are you guys sure that you guys aren't "creatures of the habit". You guys got used to one habit for a long time and now find it difficult to come out of it and get adapted to a different habit. May be if you don't have a gaming rig, then you will adapt forcibly to the consoles.
Frogstar and Phrotz both own consoles. I can't speak for the others in this thread though.

Where do people keep getting this idea that gaming rigs cost $1k+? I took my desktop workstation (that I built) and added a $150 graphics card to it. Bam, I have a "gaming rig".
It's the old market model, which was true for a time.

For quite a while now most of the major developers understand that their product needs to have functionality on lower end hardware as well as the bleeding edge.

Sounds like the PC is still being loved by many inspite of the introduction of the consoles. Hmmmm interesting. Even I used to like the PC initially, I played Half life 2, DOOM3 etc..., but after getting my PS3 I let go off my PC gaming since I found the console as the right thing for the right job.

Its just I felt that the console is a dedicated piece of hardware to get the gaming job done right. Not just me, even my friend did the same, he ditched his PC and settled with the console gaming.

I am also inclined towards optimum utilization of resources that I have. I cannot digest the fact that my money spent on some kind of electronics is collecting dust or being under utilized. If I have something redundant in electronics, then I usually sell it. Since technology keeps changing its face so fast that the value of todays electronic items is a big question mark 6 months from now.

I thought every SDer will be very economical since this is SD, but sounds like I met some lavish rich Sder's too ( owning PC , PS3, XBOX, Nintendo DS) at the same time. Simply WOW. So much money spent for gaming without realizing the redundancy. Looks like you guys don't want to miss any fun in the gaming industry.

My last question to multiple platform owners...If a new version of PS3, XBOX, DS, and Graphics card comes out then will you upgrade all of them? Probably you woudn't care...just my 2 cent opinion.

I also think that games is like an endless ocean, you can keep playing them till the end, finish one game the next one comes out, there is no end. So it is better to limit ones-self to games from a single platform or hardware. Your choices run less in this way but the money and time spent is meaningful. I feel trying to catch up with all games on PC, XBOX, PS3 and DS at the same time is like a "wild goose chase", you will never catch-up till the end.

Now lets narrow down our topic slightly since there is too much freedom....

If you are to get one gaming hardware which one would you prefer, console or a PC? period. try to answer the question to the point with reasons.

We can sum up all of your confusion by the fact that you don't realize that other people have other gaming wants and desires. It doesn't make someone lavishly rich to have more than one console and it doesn't make it redundant either. Keep in mind, these systems have been around for awhile now, so one can accumulate them over time.

Can your PS3 run Mario games? Can it run Forza? Can the Xbox run LittleBigPlanet? Can any of those run Starcraft 2 and Steam?

If you tried to put yourself in other's shoes then perhaps you'd see the argument. Not everyone is like you.

Absolutely the PC. It's the cheapest option by far. I only had to add a $150 graphics card to be able to play my games and often they come cheaper than the console. That should be your answer too if you care as much for cost as you are indicating.

The reason I didn't choose the PC is because as time progresses, the PC gets bloated with all the files leftovers by these games over a period of time. It keeps getting slowed down which annoys me. Sometimes when I get out of the game application, the PC struggles to gain back its performance for a brief moment, but I had never noticed this with consoles so far, thats why I mentioned the consoles are designed for the very reason of gaming, which I feel should be a logical choice over the PC.

Now I use my home PC for which it was originally designed to work....browse, chat, etc..may be some low end games like zuma, mario, etc.....I simply don't feel that PC's are best suited for gaming....I am sure microsoft windows also played a major role in messing up a PC's performance over the years.

i can safely say you have no idea how to maintain something that involves more than putting a disk in and booting.
My PC's don't mess up their performance at all, sounds like your issue is an idtentee error, should get that checked.

Please stick with your consoles, and CD players
don't even pick up a MP3 player.

let me put it this way, not everyone lives a limited life like you do.
What do you do if your console breaks, you buy a new one or send it in for repair.
What can break faster? a Xbox 360 or a PC? I'll put $$ on it a XBox 360 will breakdown faster, heck it was proven for all the revisions before the 360 S.

Thank you for all your answers.....its been a nice time pass. This is my first post in the lounge and I am happy with the conversations. Console is my chosen way and I do respect others choices too, especially the PC.

I believe we discussed all the advantages and disadvantages in both cases. Good to know that the PC has so many fans still.nice...

I am sure all of us are winners with choices that makes us happy.

Have a nice day fellows. see you in next post. THE END from my side.

Obviously you aren't a hardcore gamer. There aren't any redundancy unless you buy the same game for each platform. You can blame console for redundancy because they lock you into the platform or generation of platform. Whereas PC game I can still play something from back in the '80s.

Probably graphic card first...being the cheapest. Console price will drop eventually to be more affordable.

11.4 million people on World of Warcraft means PC has a lot of people still around.
