Macy's is running a background check on my 6 year old child, is that legal?

So this past christmas my 6 year old was hurt at macy's when a display shelf came crashing down.

Today is the 1st time they contacted me.

The wanted to know about a car accident we had 3 months ago.

How the hell do they know my 6 year old was in a car accident unless they ran a background check.

Any ideas?

And no trolls, I'm not looking for legal advice, I'm looking for the database that Macy's used to check on my child.

you do know that there is a record for almost every American in the USA.... privacy is DEAD..

You want someone to blame how they know so much shit bout you.... look in the mirror and the rest of the americans who threw away all their rights along time ago because they were told it was good for them....

Now I don't know how Macy's were doing this, if you didn't give Macy your name....

There is no reason why you need to tell anyone anything if your kid wasn't serious hurt... Also did the accident happen cause your little girl was tugging on the selving to begin with

Most companies aren't going to contact you immediately after an accident at their business. They wait for your response. Since they are inquiring about your child's accident/injury history, I'd bet you have already initiated a lawsuit against them or some kind of claim.

As far as the legalities of a background check, it's totally legal if they're looking into public records that's not protected by privacy laws. As far as medical records, I highly doubt they can get their hands on them. First of all, they would have to do a lot of sleuthing to find your child's doctors.....that info is not readily available for anyone to find. Secondly, they then have to convince the office/hospital to give them a copy. And, we know that a medical facility would NEVER do that unless they have a signed authorization from you.
