hot compresses are great for styes and pink eyes!
but you also need to make sure to wash the eye. if you have any refresh eye drops that's best. if you're going to buy some, get the kind that says refresh plus, preservative free and comes in individual vials, so as not to put a bottle to your infected eye. refresh is essentially sterile saline solution but has the same composition as your natural tears and so is very good to clean out your eye and lubricate it.
if you don't have refresh and can't get any, use a clean small glass bowl, fill it with cold water, place face down so the bowl "cups" your eye, then raise head to rinse out inside of eye with the water. you'll feel the water get all warm. do it a few times a day, although refresh is easier to do and better.
the idea is to clean out the infection gunk from inside your eye and keep the eye lubricated. the dryness is probably making it feel more sore. heated homes in the winter don't help.

About the compress: I was told not to use a washcloth, as it loses the heat too rapidly. You want to use as a compress that's as hot as you can stand. I made a small bag, about the size of an eyeglass case, and filled it with dry rice. 30 seconds in the microwave (+/-) and leave it on for 5 minutes. Twice a day. Helps the glands in the eyelids secrete whatever it is they do.
Getgreen is right on about the type of eyedrops. Be sure you don't use the same vial for both eyes. You don't want to cross-contaminate.
I know I have some kind of eye drops around here from all my drug store deals.. let me go search for some. Didn't even think of that.. I think it would feel better if I actually got some sleep last night *shrug* but I didn't..

So now the dilemma is how do we get up there for the funeral/memorial service? We are still waiting on one last W-2 before we can file our taxes, and who knows when that will come in. Guess I need to start praying it in!

compress... rice works great. so does salt. take a clean cheesecloth or kerchief. heat salt in a pan till the grains start popping and the salt texture becomes much finer. put into a doubled cheesecloth. be careful it will be VERY hot! knot the cloth to make a small bag. this will stay hot/warm for hours so you could use it as a periodic compress without having to reheat. but be very careful using when you first heat it because it will be very, very, very hot.

The pain is not really in my eye.. just the eye lid is sore on the outside.. the compress seems to help the most.

I started having eye pain last night while at work.. Feeling like a stye was coming on.. When I got home last night, almost my entire eye lid was puffy and red.. I remember someone on here had a really bad problem a few months ago.. I started with the warm compress.. It made it feel better but it is pretty sore this morning.. Hoping this day improves!

And you just can't let those things go - would be hard to explain to caseworkers that you did not beat your child - you just grazed them scraping half dried poop off them with a putty knife...
So when my son finally strarted taking his pants off after he dirtied them - I took that as a good sign that he had reached the point that he actually cared that his pants were poopy.
Wow! I still remember that moment.... after all these years... Had just shampooed the carpets and then noticed my son must have tracked cookies in the house.... then I started noticing there were more chocolate cookies than vanilla cookies... then I noticed the chocolate wasn't cookies....
