How much emergency money do you keep?

8,038 649 March 25, 2011 at 07:56 PM in Question
Just wondering approximately how much cash people keep on hand in the event of an emergency…

not talking about the 20 behind your drivers liscense…

i am referring to the money burried in your sock drawer, under your mattress, in a box in the back yard etc..

they money you keep on hand for the earthquake, flood, riot, hurricane, etc…

I am refreshing my emergency supplies and just am not sure if I have enough cash on hand (yes I am making sure i have it in smaller bills so i can make change in the event others cant)

Around $2k in different denominations. Also easily around $200 in loose change.

Ham radio... bulb

I should look into that. Don't you have to have a license to operate one, though?

I think you're smart to keep a cash supply, but some of us just don't have any extra funds.
I dont really have all that much money either… its one of those things that if you stick $5 in a shoe box every so often you will find you can save more than you think. the hardest part is saving it for the actual emergencies which is why i make it harder to get at the cash in the supplies…

1) yes to use but not to buy
2) when a tornado, bomb, whatever hits it wont matter if you have a license or not… at that point in time its a tool for survival and may be the ONLY way you can get EMS
3) you can take a cram session boot camp class for about 30$ which includes the test and cost of the test...

if you dont want to go the HAM route… you could always go CB which is far more effective than frs/gmrs but apparently it is the 4chan of the radio world…

This is a dangerous train of thought. Always maintain accountability for your actions. That was one of the major downfalls with Katrina. Everyone thought it was a post-apocalyptic world, and laws didn't matter anymore. Now we're seeing all of the crimes surfacing and charges being filed.

I'd rather pay the $10 to get a license. Stick Out Tongue

Iagree but what im saying is if you have a radio and your neighbor has a branch through their chest and are bleeding and the phones arent working, you should use the radio to try to get help….

there is a difference between "responsibly" breaking the law, and going all anarchy….

I know. Smilie

I just didn't like the way that first part was worded. I say do what it takes to survive. Just don't assume that laws don't apply anymore (just a general statement, not directed at you specifically).

OK. I'll try to keep a stash of small bills in my sock drawer or something. at least a few hundred.
Payday I'll stash a 20 then every payday the same. It will take some time to get a few hundred.
But I'll see what I can do. nod

so which is better? cash or a stockpile?
If you have to evacuate then cash...but if you can bunker down, then it's a stockpile.

Both...

You don't know what you're gonna be able to do, or if you're even gonna be able to come back to your stockpile.

I'm really big on being prepared. I have enough medical supplies to treat the neighborhood. Have 2 large generators (the Honda is my baby) and maintain at least 60 gallons of drinking water at all times...etc etc etc

Obligatory

It's all about moderation. Having a good stockpile, that you can actually use. Not becoming obsessed w/it. Making it bigger and bigger just so you can boast about it.

Cash is a hard one...$100 will not get you far...but I can't see myself keeping $1K in my house???

It's all about being able to survive. Period.

And it's all worthless if someone can just come in with a baseball bat and take it from you.
