I started this thread for anyone who wants to come here for lite discussion, jokes, and just general discussion and fun.

Kiva members give her local bank $500 to lend to her, she pays it back to the bank and the money gets sent back to the Kiva members. We don't get any interest -- the bank gets that -- but the money goes back to our "accounts" and we can either withdraw or reinvest it. Our investments in people are for as little as $25 each, up to whatever amount we want to give.
I've been doing this for several years and only give money to women in the middle east. I figure that every woman who makes a better life for herself, her family, and her neighbors will add a little more stability to the region.
A few years ago, Kiva (which is based out of San Francisco) decided that the recession in this country was bad enough to consider us 3rd World (although that's not how they phrased it, of course). So now we can even lend money to people in the States – people not eligible for standard loans at decent interest rates. As Kiva operates world-wide, I can just see some guy in Uzbekistan lending $25 to a guy in New Orleans doing Katrina reconstruction work.
What really impresses me about the program is that no one I've "invested in" has ever defaulted on a loan.
So that's what I did while waiting for the Next Movie site to make up its mind to start giving stuff away.
