Official 2011 Secret Santa Thread--- Partner List in post #1009 Spoilers!!!!

11,159 2,474 October 23, 2011 at 11:43 AM in Video Games (5)

We all like to buy stuff. We all like to give stuff. Secret Santa is all of that!

*The Rules*

You need to have been a member for at least six months with 1000 posts OR 100 reps. This has been the requirement for Secret Santa in the past and while it's not foolproof we've never come up with anything better so I'm sticking to this.

This isn't done to be mean or exclusive. However I know the biggest reason I've had fun with Secret Santa in previous years is because I've known the person well enough to be able to know what they'd truly like and be excited to hear what they think about it. If you don't have enough posts/reps this for this years Secret Santa, we hope you can join us next year

You need to sign up by November 7th.

To do this please PM me. Please put Secret Santa in the title.

In order to have your name added to the list of participants you need to send me your address. As with every year, this address will only be seen by me and the person who is sending you the gift. Under no circumstances will your address ever be given out to anyone else. If it's found someone has given out another person's address they got from the Secret Santa they will be banned from this and future Secret Santas.

I can only put your name in the list of participants once I have received your shipping address.

Spending limit is $20.00 plus shipping.
I know many of us have had some hard times with money in the past year. $20.00 is the limit but you do not have to spend that much. From what I've seen in the past, some of the best/funniest/most thoughtful gifts haven't always been the most expensive. Just send what you think will make the person you're sending the gift smile.

Your gift must be shipped by Monday December 5th.
You must get a delivery confirmation and a tracking number just in case the gift gets lost in the mail or if there is any confusion about if the package has been delivered or not. Please send me that tracking number. Four weeks of shopping should be plenty of time to find something for your person. This includes Black Friday and Cyber Monday both.

You will need to fill out the Secret Santa questionnaire found at the bottom of this post.
Please be as complete as you can. It will make it easier for your Secret Santa to find something you truly like if you answer it completely.

So you're excited to participate. What happens now?

1.) PM me on or before Monday November 7th that you want to participate. Include your shipping address. You will not be added to the list unless I have received your address. There will also be a list in the wiki of people who are participating. Please include your name there as well.

2.) You will see a questionnaire at the end of this post. Please answer those questions and make a new post with those answers.

3.) Soon after the November 7th cut off date you will receive the name and address of your Secret Santa partner. Click on the person's name in the wikipost to be taken to their questionnaire and what they've said they'd like.

4.) Get it all ready and ship by Monday December 5th. Make sure to buy the delivery confirmation and tracking number. Please email or PM me that you have shipped it and the tracking number. USPS gives it free for online ordering. If the recipient should open it immediately let me know that too!

5.) Please PM me when you have received your gift.

6.) Jump up and down with joy. A present!! You can post in the thread you received it and if you opened it you can share what you got if you like.

7.) After Christmas Day we can all tell everyone who we shopped for. It will also be updated in the wiki. Please try to keep secret as much as you can who you are shopping for.

*FAQ*

Can I open the package as soon as I get it or do I need to wait until Christmas?
Some people can't wait to rip into the package and others want to save the excitement for Christmas Eve/Day. The choice is completely yours.

What if I'm going to be out of town around the time the gift will be arriving?
It's understandable that this time of year people travel out of town to see family and friends. If that's the case, please make sure to have your deliveries held at the post office/UPS/etc. If you know in advance you will be out of town, you can contact me with the dates you'll be gone and I'll let your SS know. They may be able to adjust when they ship it so it will get to you while you are there.

Crap. I wanted to participate but now I can't for whatever reason. What do I do?
Life happens. We understand that. However please let me know this as soon as you realize you are unable to participate this year. This is very important.

I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to ship in time or I completely forgot I needed to buy/ship the gift by December 5. What do I do?
Let me know right away. It is very sad to hear about someone who's waiting everyday to see when their gift arrives only to not have it come. If for some reason it is shipped out later, I'll inform the person you are shipping it to that it may arrive a little late. However shipping it late is not ideal and I'm sure we will all be able to meet the shipping deadline.

Wow, I read my person's questionnaire but I still have NO idea what to get them or I have a question about something on their list. What should I do?
You can PM me and I can contact your person and ask them for more info. You could also PM someone you know is their friend and ask them to ask your person for clarification on their list. Or you could stalk all their previous posts until you know enough about them.

Can I request to be a particular person's Secret Santa?
No.

Can I change who I'm supposed to buy for once I receive their name?
No.

I was involved in previous years but didn't send a gift because I forgot/got busy/whatever. Can I enter this year?
Nope.

The Questionnaire

Favorite Type of Food (i.e. Italian, Mexican, McDonald's, Burger King, etc):
Favorite Candy (things that won't melt or go bad in mail):
Favorite Scent:
Favorite Hobby:
Favorite books or type :
Favorite movies or genres:
Favorite animal:
Favorite Color:
Favorite Store:
Favorite Sports Team:
Favorite Music Artist/Type or a CD you would like:

Do you collect anything:
Are you male or female:
Is there anything (not expensive) you want or need:
Is there anything that you Don't want:
Anything else you would like your SS to know about you:

Last year Autumn ran a last chance sign up because some people hadn't been to The Lounge in awhile and did not see the Secret Santa or had forgotten to enter. If there is someone you think would want to participate please PM them and make sure they know the sign up date.

Have fun!!

CC, your gifts are awesome! I just looked at the photos. So cute! Whoever had you did a great job!

VM, I am so sorry to hear about what happened Frown I feel badly that you and damsel were both disappointed by your gifts.

I am really very surprised that this would happen, since we have been doing SS for several years now.

I mentioned this when damsel got her gifts, and I'll say it again: is it at all possible that the gift giver was trying to be the "Ultimate SDer", and send as much stuff as possible for as little out of pocket cost as possible?

Please know, I am not trying to excuse any thoughtless behavior, and no, I am not your SS nor damsel's! laugh out loud I only say this because I don't want to think that someone (two someones!) would deliberatley send out a pile of crap just to be mean or hateful at Christmas time Frown

I don't quite understand how someone could have shipped my gift cheaply considering it weighed 37 lbs. and came from California all the way to New York. laugh out loud

I'm not worried about it anymore. I put a lot of thought into the person I was supposed to buy for and that was fun. I think he/she will enjoy everything and that's really all that counts. I'll chalk it up as a lesson to be more specific about what I don't want next year. laugh out loud

Well, I didn't mean the shipping cost, I meant the gifts. Smilie But regardless, yeah, it's not cool that this happened to to people.

As I said, I am not trying to defend anyone, or exuse any bad behavior.

I was just trying to think of reasons as to why your SS's may have done what they did.

Gift Rejection Etiquette: How to Graciously Redirect Unwanted Presents

Quote :
No matter how much you wish your great aunt had taken a look at your wish list instead of giving you a used and yellowed pair of white gloves again, you should always practice present-receiving etiquette-even when the gift in question makes your jaw drop for all the wrong reasons.
You people do realize that the matches are going to be posted after Christmas, right? I didn't participate, I get that I don't have a stake in this whole thing but I think it's tacky to trash-talk someone who took the time and effort to ship a gift. If you get something you consider hateful and/or junk, take it to the SS leader. You don't complain about it in the thread. Also, participating is a risk you chose to take. There's always a chance you won't get something you like. Like I've told my kids since they were preschoolers, "You get what you get and you don't throw a fit."
