You don't have to switch distros just to get away from Gnome (I don't care for Gnome myself).
Shell commands will be independent of distro, too. It shouldn't take much to apt-get install KDE, LXDE, or Cinnamon (all are more like Windows-style), and I believe you can switch your desktop environment GUI at the login screen.
That's true, too. I'm just trying to get away from Windows more and more. Plus Gnome/Ubuntu haven't been very stable on my computer. I can't even su shutdown -h 0 any more. It just freezes at the Ubuntu screen when trying to shut down. Whatever they did in the update a week or two ago has screwed it up.

I also can't remember my damn root password so i need to do a fresh install any way.

I'd throw Mint on it to have something you can use fairly easily, and then work on Debian.

Yep. They should recognize each other and auto-config Grub to add entries for themselves, so you can pick which you want at boot time.

I was considering it, but wasn't sure how it worked. So they talk to each other pretty well? But if I install something on Mint that doesn't make it automatically available on Debian does it?

Right, they'll still be completely independent installs, you'll probably want a partition for each. They may be able to share a swap partition, I don't recall for sure. It will just see during the install that hey, you've already got Linux on here, should I play nice so we can run side by side?

Very cool. Thanks for the advice.

All are welcome in Chewie's thread . . . . except for Nagin and his airhead cock catcher.

I've planted those as well as marigolds. One of these days I'll wise up and put some bird houses on poles to get some birds in there to get the remainder of the insects. The hook worms and the cabbage beetles will wipe out an entire garden.
Purple Martins and bats will help keep the insect population down. But I think it's too late to attract Purple Martins this year. BTW, you can buy a fancy birdhouse for them or you can hang up hollowed out gourds. But they have to be placed just right or the birds will shun them, see the link.

That aunt also had several Purple Martin houses and what the birds didn't take care of, her kids did. One of their daily chores was to go out there first thing every morning and evening and pick beetles and caterpillars off the plants in the garden each day, to take care of the ones that got past the flower barrier. Don't you have a passel of kids? Wink

We've got some bats, but they tend to stick to the mosquitos and flying insects. I'll have to look in to those gourds. I think we have some laying around. And I'm thinking next year the twins will be old enough to traverse the garden without killing any plants. Thanks for the ideas. High Five

What if I put one in my yard where there ought to be a garden, but there isn't?
