Soooo.. I might have a line on passes to F1 Austin on Friday for qualifying. Thinking I need to take this opportunity and run with it. I imagine it'll be worth burning a vacation day from work for it.
:jealous:

ML will be there too.

it is going to be an epic, epic weekend Faint

logistics will likely suck and things will go wrong, but Friday shouldn't be too bad, less people at the track in general. Bring comfortable shoes - it's over a mile from the shuttle bus drop off lot to the closest portion of the track, then the circuit itself is 3.4 miles, so it's a pretty big hike. Nearly everyone enters on the low side for the grand plaza near turn 15. Turn 1 is the highest point on the track, between T9 and T10 is the second highest point.

if you know someone not using their Friday tickets, I have a coworker that would be interested in going just for Friday.

of course, you can also buy 2013 tickets for events at the track, which includes motoGP motorcycles, Australian V8 supercars (think NASCAR by Aussies, only on road circuits), and American Le Mans and World Endurance Challenge (related but different prototype and touring car races). all will have lower price points than F1, some by quite a bit.

have I mentioned that I'm completely stoked for this race weekend Woot Yahoo! I'm really, really looking forward to it. I've got a buddy coming into town, and I'm thinking of renting a 100-400 mm lens for my camera for the weekend, it should be great, great fun nod

the official track opening ceremony was today for select invitees and the media. Mario lapped the 79 Lotus R30 among other events (he was also supposed to lap the 2010 lotus, but apparently that car wouldn't run for some reason).
video thanks to the friends of formula 1 austin texas facebook group:

my tickets are for the turn 9 - 10 grandstands, which are on the left. near as I can tell, that looks like i'll have great site lines for turns 8 to 12 as a minimum, which means i'll see two of the track's three overtaking points Whee

They have supposedly dog proofed the track in India.

"We detected between six to seven entry points through which dogs or other stray animals were able to intrude on the circuit," Askari Zaidi told the BBC.

"These points have been completely sealed off, while fencing around the circuit has now got two layers. In addition there will be a few teams of dog catchers around the circuit."

They also have cows wandering around in the the area around the track. Hope they cow proofed the fencing too. EEK!

I don't think they would kill the dogs, since they're Hindu, the people, not the dogs. Big Grin They did say they will have dog catchers on duty around the track during the F1 events.

I'm looking forward to the F1 coverage from Austin. I know the track a bit from released videos but I can't wait to see the cars on track during P1-3 and Qualy. I hope the track turns out some good action and not boring Abu Dhabi yawn fest.

Bounce Can't wait! Bounce

Wish we were going to be there but with all the problems with building the track and not knowing if it would really happen, and add to that a sick kitty who needs daily meds, we just couldn't justify spending the money on flights and vet care. Oh well, next year we'll be there. nod

Cool Excelent pic ML. I'm sure Grosjean was just saluting the HRT. laugh out loud

I watched a few minutes of the practice, need to restart it before DH gets home. The track looks amazing.

With your foot problems you should inquire if they have a cart that can take you to that bleacher area. You don't want to wind up not being able to walk at all on race day because you did too much the first two days.

we have a view from the apex of turn 6 to the entry to turn 12, essentially all of sector 2. We can even see some of the stadium section back towards turn 15 Whee

I'll see if I can cut down on the walking tomorrow, I do need to pace myself Faint it's about five blocks from my condo to the downtown loop bus, then three blocks on the other side of downtown to the shuttle to the track, then about a mile from the shuttle drop off to the main gate at the grand plaza. there is a tram that runs around the track, at least, so we can take the tram from the grand plaza (near the stadium section) around to turn 10, then it's a walk up hill to the grand stands for turns 9-10. We ended up walking back from turn 9 to the grand plaza through the track, it was interesting to see but it's a good hike, at least 3/4 of a mile, I'd say. then a mile back to the shuttle stop, with 30+ minutes waiting in line for the busses. then we get dumped back at fifteenth street, and we walked the entire way back to my place, a little more than 1.5 miles (we did stop for dinner on sixth street, at least). I'm fairly certain I walked more than 5 miles today, with a huge amount of elevation change along the way EEK!

and a Hamilton shot for you, ZM:

Was at turn 12 today. Tons of fun. I'm trying to find passes to the race on Sunday.
