Amazon.com and the Texas Comptroller said Friday that Amazon will begin to collect Texas state sales tax beginning July 1, in an agreement that Comptroller Susan Combs said "resolves all sales tax issues between Texas and Amazon."

Step 1: look up item on amazon
Step 2: Click on other sellers
Step 3: buy same item at prob the same price with no sales tax, fulfilled by amazon
Step 1: Just looked up the 12 purchases I made in the last week. Only 1 was same price or cheaper (was 12 cents cheaper).
Step 2: No 2 day shipping with that item.
Step 3: Amazon sells will decline - inevitable.

Will I still purchase from Amazon - Yes. I was just commenting my purchases would decline 30-40 percent. Not complaining, just stating the facts to my purchasing habits. Amazon is not always cheaper on a lot of purchases, however after you add in tax it may be the same, slightly more, or slightly less. Amazon has always got my purchases in these events, but now I will be purchasing elsewhere on some of these occasions. Also I know this is not Amazons fault but I can't see paying more when I don't have to. What would be nice is if Amazon reduced their prime fee for tax states. Maybe $49 instead of $79.

you're right, Texas doesn't need those taxes... the education can't get much worse than it is already, right?

I will give you, though, that Texas needs to fix it's tax system. property tax relief enacted six years ago is the main source of the budget troubles in the past two years and going forward, it's a structural hole that's never been filled, and as much as Perry takes credit for it, it's a problem when teachers and local governments can't even keep with population growth that's happening.

Never before had a Texas comptroller accepted the promise of jobs and business investment to settle a tax dispute.

But is it legal?

Austin lawyer Buck Wood, a tax attorney and a former deputy comptroller and general counsel under the late Comptroller Bob Bullock, says no.

"While this may seem to be a reasonable resolution in people's minds," Wood said, "it's not worth the paper it's written on. She just can't do it."...

Will amazon have tax in Texas now?
Supriya S:Hello Ruy.
Me:Hi
Supriya S:Yes Ruy, Amazon.com LLC and Amazon Digital Services, Inc. are required to charge sales tax on orders shipped to destinations in Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, Texas (effective July 1, 2012) and Washington.
Me:So, now what makes Amazon different from Walmart, Best buy, etc?
The only reason I would buy off Amazon was because of no Tax.
Supriya S:I'm sorry but in this situation the only option for me is to forward your feedback to our concerned department as we are not authorized to handle tax issues.

:'(
make an address elsewhere and deposit a form in the post office to have them redirect mails to TX ... Big Grin j'kin

At least the best buy salespeople won't complain about amazon not charging tax anymore.

Just read an article on CNN about how Amazon will begin charging tax on purchases for Texas residents on July 1st. Pennsylvania and California will begin some time in September of this year. Seems like a lot of other states will be included in the next few years.

I think this was important to post because if you're waiting to buy something big on Amazon, you might want to do it before the sales tax kicks in.

How does Amazon determine your tax assessment? Is it based on billing address or shipping address?

Hello brick and mortar Amazon stores then. We will probably see small amazon stores pushing kindles like apple and also probably everything you buy in store will probably arrive to your house in 2 days for free or ships to store overnight. Sucks we will have to pay tax, but sooner or later all the states minus Delaware will be paying it.

I don't think it matters. I think all Internet purchases apply. They call it the "amazon tax" only because everyone knows amazon.

I don't know why paying taxes that you should have been reporting on your state tax return is considered "being screwed".
