He road hard. He had great success and great failure. The one love he had in his life was his wife, and he screwed that up. As successful as he was, he was equally disgusted with himself. And still his wife loved him, and then she died. This was one last thing he wanted to do, sort of to be relevant, but also to remember his life and his wife.
